Busr bin Sa'id (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates from Sayyiduna Zayd bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) made a compartment of a mat in the mosque and prayed in it for some nights. People gathered. Then they did not hear his (peace and blessings be upon him) voice and thought that he (peace and blessings be upon him) had fallen asleep, so they began to clear their throats so that he (peace and blessings be upon him) would come out to them. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I kept seeing your state, until I feared that it might be made obligatory upon you. Had it been made obligatory upon you, you would not have been able to perform it. O people! Pray at night in your homes, for the best prayer of a man is in his home, except the obligatory prayer."

Abu Salamah bin Abd al-Rahman narrates from Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had a mat which he (peace and blessings be upon him) would make into a compartment in the mosque at night and pray in it. The people began praying along with his (peace and blessings be upon him) prayer, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) would spread this mat out during the day. The people began to come night after night. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O people! Take upon yourselves only as many deeds as you are able, for Allah does not grow weary (of rewarding) until you grow weary (of deeds), and the deeds most beloved to Allah are those that are done consistently, even if they are few." When the family of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) began a deed, they would keep to it consistently.
