(a) Azraq bin Qays narrates that our imam, Abu Rimthah (may Allah be pleased with him), led us in prayer and said: I prayed with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in this same way. Abu Bakr and Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) were standing in the first row on his right. There was another man as well who had joined in the opening takbir. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had finished the prayer, he gave the salam to his right and to his left until we saw the whiteness of his cheeks; then he stood up, just as I (Abu Rimthah) stood up. Then the man who had joined in the opening takbir stood up and began another (voluntary) prayer, so Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) rushed towards him, seized him by the shoulders, shook him and said: Sit down, for the People of the Book were destroyed only because they made no break between their obligatory and voluntary prayers.
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) raised his gaze, looked, and said: "O son of al-Khattab! Allah Almighty has granted you the ability to say what is right."
(b) Imam al-Bayhaqi (may Allah have mercy on him) says: If this hadith is established, then the imam and the follower have the same ruling in this matter. Likewise is the hadith of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him); and in this chapter there is a hadith more authentic than all that we have mentioned.

(a) Umar bin Ata bin Abi al-Khuwar narrates that Nafi' bin Jubayr (may Allah have mercy on him) sent him to al-Sa'ib, the son of Namir's sister (may Allah be pleased with him), to ask him about something that Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) had seen him do during prayer. He said: Yes! I offered the Jumu'ah prayer with him in the maqsurah. When the imam gave the salam, I stood up in my place and prayed. When he came in, he sent for me and said: Do not repeat what you have done. When you pray the Jumu'ah prayer, do not join any prayer to it at that time until you have spoken or changed your place, because the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded us "that we should not pray a voluntary prayer after the obligatory prayer until we have spoken or left that place."
(b) Abd al-Razzaq narrated a similar report from Ibn Jurayj; at its end it says that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded: "No voluntary prayer is to be prayed after the obligatory prayer until one has spoken or the like, or changed one's place."

Ibn Jurayj narrates, through another chain, a report with the same meaning as the one mentioned above, except that at its end it says: When I gave the salam, I stood up; he did not mention the imam.
This report includes Jumu'ah and other prayers, just as his (peace and blessings be upon him) statement, "No voluntary prayer is to be joined to the obligatory prayer," includes both the imam and the follower. Imam al-Shafi'i (may Allah have mercy on him) mentioned it in the report transmitted by Imam al-Muzani (may Allah have mercy on him), and I have transmitted it from the athar of Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both). This statement of Imam al-Shafi'i (may Allah have mercy on him) is in the Kitab al-Jumu'ah of al-Mabsut.

(a) It is transmitted from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that he saw no harm in a man offering voluntary prayer in the same place, or (the narrator said:) he saw him doing so. This doubt is from the narrator Ali (bin Thabit).
(b) It has been narrated to us from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that he distinguished in this matter between the imam and the follower, considering it disliked (makruh) for the imam to do so while holding it permissible for the follower. Its chain is not strong.
