(a) Sayyiduna Abu Mahdhurah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) taught him the adhan in nineteen phrases and the iqamah in seventeen. The adhan is: "'Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar, ashhadu an la ilaha illallah, ashhadu an la ilaha illallah, ashhadu anna Muhammadan rasulullah, ashhadu anna Muhammadan rasulullah, ashhadu an la ilaha illallah, ashhadu an la ilaha illallah, ashhadu anna Muhammadan rasulullah, ashhadu anna Muhammadan rasulullah' (Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest, I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah), 'Hayya 'ala al-salah' (Come to prayer) twice, 'Hayya 'ala al-falah' (Come to success) twice, 'Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar, la ilaha illallah' (Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest, there is no god but Allah)" and the iqamah twice each.

(a) It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Mahdhurah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered about twenty men to give the adhan, and the voice of Sayyiduna Abu Mahdhurah (may Allah be pleased with him) pleased him (peace and blessings be upon him), so he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Say: 'Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar, ashhadu an la ilaha illallah, ashhadu an la ilaha illallah, ashhadu anna Muhammadan rasulullah, ashhadu anna Muhammadan rasulullah, ashhadu an la ilaha illallah, ashhadu an la ilaha illallah, ashhadu anna Muhammadan rasulullah, ashhadu anna Muhammadan rasulullah, hayya 'ala al-salah, hayya 'ala al-salah, hayya 'ala al-falah, hayya 'ala al-falah, Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar, la ilaha illallah' (Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest, I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, come to prayer, come to prayer, come to success, come to success, Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest, there is no god but Allah)." And the iqamah is likewise.
(b) He narrated it thus. There is agreement that, when the adhan is with tarji', the iqamah is not like the adhan in the number of its words; this shows that what is meant is the kind of words, and that this explanation came from some of the narrators.
(c) Hisham al-Dastuwa'i narrated this hadith from Amir al-Ahwal without mentioning the iqamah in it, and that portion is what Muslim recorded in his Sahih; perhaps he left out the narration of Hammam bin Yahya because of doubt about the chain of the iqamah mentioned in it. And Allah knows best.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Mahdhurah (may Allah be pleased with him): When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) returned from Hunayn, I set out from Makkah as the tenth of ten, seeking them. I heard them giving the adhan for prayer, and we stood up and gave the adhan too, mocking them. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stood and said: "I heard among these people the adhan of a person with a beautiful voice." He (peace and blessings be upon him) sent for us, and we gave the adhan one by one; I was the last of them. When I gave the adhan, he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Come." He seated me in front of him, passed his hand over my forelock and prayed for blessing for me three times, then said: "Go and give the adhan at the Sacred House." I said: O Messenger of Allah, how? He (peace and blessings be upon him) taught me the adhan as the muezzins give it now: 'Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar, ashhadu an la ilaha illallah, ashhadu an la ilaha illallah, ashhadu anna Muhammadan rasulullah, ashhadu anna Muhammadan rasulullah, ashhadu an la ilaha illallah, ashhadu an la ilaha illallah, ashhadu anna Muhammadan rasulullah, ashhadu anna Muhammadan rasulullah, hayya 'ala al-salah, hayya 'ala al-salah, hayya 'ala al-falah, hayya 'ala al-falah, al-salatu khayrun min al-nawm, al-salatu khayrun min al-nawm' (Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest, I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, come to prayer, come to prayer, come to success, come to success, prayer is better than sleep, prayer is better than sleep) in the first adhan of the morning, 'Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar, la ilaha illallah' (Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest, there is no god but Allah). He said: And he taught me the iqamah twice each: 'Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar, ashhadu an la ilaha illallah, ashhadu an la ilaha illallah, ashhadu anna Muhammadan rasulullah, ashhadu anna Muhammadan rasulullah, hayya 'ala al-salah, hayya 'ala al-salah, hayya 'ala al-falah, hayya 'ala al-falah, qad qamat al-salah, qad qamat al-salah, Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar, la ilaha illallah' (Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest, I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, come to prayer, come to prayer, come to success, come to success, the prayer has been established, the prayer has been established, Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest, there is no god but Allah).

(a) It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Mahdhurah (may Allah be pleased with him) that when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) set out for Hunayn, he said 'Allahu akbar' four times at the beginning of the adhan, and he said: "He taught me the iqamah twice: 'Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar, ashhadu an la ilaha illallah, ashhadu anna Muhammadan rasulullah, hayya 'ala al-salah, hayya 'ala al-falah, qad qamat al-salah, qad qamat al-salah, Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar, la ilaha illallah' (Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest, I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, come to prayer, come to success, the prayer has been established, the prayer has been established, Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest, there is no god but Allah)." He said the words of the iqamah singly and said 'Qad qamat al-salah' twice.

(a) It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Mahdhurah (may Allah be pleased with him), and at the end of this hadith it says: "When you say the iqamah, say it twice: 'Qad qamat al-salah, qad qamat al-salah' (The prayer has been established, the prayer has been established). Did you hear?"
And he added these words: Abu Mahdhurah (may Allah be pleased with him) would not cut the hair of his forelock nor part it, because the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had passed his hand over it.
(b) Muhammad bin Ishaq bin Khuzaymah (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Tarji' in the adhan together with saying the iqamah twice is of the kind of permissible difference. It is permissible for the muezzin to give the adhan with tarji' and to say the iqamah twice; likewise it is permissible to say the words of the adhan twice each and the iqamah singly. Both of these ways are established from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Saying the words of both the adhan and the iqamah twice each is not established from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) (as is the prevalent practice nowadays).
(c) Repeating the words of the iqamah other than 'Allahu akbar' and 'Qad qamat al-salah' is open to question. The differences among the narrations point to the order to say it twice being only for 'Qad qamat al-salah'. The persistence of Sayyiduna Abu Mahdhurah (may Allah be pleased with him) and his descendants in tarji' in the adhan and in saying the iqamah singly is evidence that necessitates the weakness of the narrations of whoever reported them twice each. This matter requires that Sayyiduna Abu Mahdhurah (may Allah be pleased with him) and his descendants, and Sayyiduna Sa'd al-Qaraz (may Allah be pleased with him) and his descendants, continued giving the adhan in the Haram as long as they lived, and after that the change occurred in the period of the rule of the Egyptians.

(a) Imam al-Shafi'i (may Allah have mercy on him) said: I met Ibrahim bin Abd al-Aziz bin Abd al-Malik bin Abi Mahdhurah giving the adhan as Ibn Muhayriz related it, that is, with tarji', and I heard him narrate from his father, from Ibn Muhayriz, from Sayyiduna Abu Mahdhurah (may Allah be pleased with him), from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), the meaning of what Ibn Jurayj related. Al-Shafi'i said: And I heard him say the iqamah, and he would say: 'Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar, ashhadu an la ilaha illallah, ashhadu anna Muhammadan rasulullah, hayya 'ala al-salah, hayya 'ala al-falah, qad qamat al-salah, qad qamat al-salah, Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar, la ilaha illallah' (Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest, I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, come to prayer, come to success, the prayer has been established, the prayer has been established, Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest, there is no god but Allah). Al-Shafi'i said: And I heard him relate the iqamah as a report just as he related the adhan.
(b) In the narration of al-Hasan bin Muhammad bin al-Sabbah al-Za'farani from Imam al-Shafi'i (may Allah have mercy on him) concerning how the adhan and the iqamah are said, the Imam said: Relying on narrations in this matter is needless effort, for the adhan is given five times every day and night in the two Mosques before the eyes of the Ansar and the Muhajirun, and the muezzins of Makkah are the family of Abu Mahdhurah. Sayyiduna Abu Mahdhurah (may Allah be pleased with him) gave the adhan for the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), who taught him the adhan and then appointed him in Makkah; and the family of Sa'd al-Qaraz gave the adhan in Madinah from the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and in the time of Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him). All of them relate the adhan, the iqamah and the tathwib at the time of Fajr, 'Al-salatu khayrun min al-nawm' (Prayer is better than sleep), as we have stated. If it were possible that this was an error on the part of all of them, while the people are present with them, and then someone came to us from the far ends of the earth to teach us, it would be permissible for him to ask about Arafah and Mina and then contradict us; and if he contradicted us about the prayer times, that would be more permissible for him than contradicting us in this evident, practised matter.

Walid bin Muslim said: I asked Malik bin Anas (may Allah have mercy on him) about the sunnah way of the adhan, and he said: "What do you say in the adhan, and from whom did you learn the adhan?" Walid said: I said: Sa'id bin Abd al-Aziz, Ibn Jabir and others informed me that Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) did not give the adhan for anyone after the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). He wanted to go for jihad, and Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) wanted to stop him. He said: "If you freed me for the sake of Allah, then do not hold me back from jihad; and if you freed me for yourself, I will stay." So he let him go, and he was in Syria until Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) came to them at al-Jabiyah. The Muslims asked Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) to ask Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) to give the adhan for them. He asked him, and Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) gave the adhan for them that day, or they said: for one prayer. They said: No one was seen weeping more than they did that day when they heard his voice, remembering the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). They said: We think, or they said: We say, that the adhan of the people of Syria was in accordance with his adhan that day. Imam Malik (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Sayyiduna Sa'd al-Qaraz (may Allah be pleased with him) did not give the adhan in this mosque for just one day or one prayer; in the time of Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him), in the presence of a great number of the Companions, he continued giving the adhan, and no one objected. Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) and his sons give the adhan in that way to this day. If there were a governor who would listen to me, I would see to it that he united this Ummah upon their adhan. Imam Malik (may Allah have mercy on him) was asked: How was their adhan? He said: They would say: 'Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar, ashhadu an la ilaha illallah, ashhadu an la ilaha illallah, ashhadu anna Muhammadan rasulullah, ashhadu anna Muhammadan rasulullah' (Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest, I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah), then they would repeat, saying: 'Ashhadu an la ilaha illallah, ashhadu an la ilaha illallah, ashhadu anna Muhammadan rasulullah, ashhadu anna Muhammadan rasulullah, hayya 'ala al-salah, hayya 'ala al-salah, hayya 'ala al-falah, hayya 'ala al-falah, Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar, la ilaha illallah' (I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, come to prayer, come to prayer, come to success, come to success, Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest, there is no god but Allah), and the iqamah once each.
