(a) Imam al-Shafi'i (may Allah have mercy on him) said: I met Ibrahim bin Abd al-Aziz bin Abd al-Malik bin Abi Mahdhurah giving the adhan as Ibn Muhayriz related it, that is, with tarji', and I heard him narrate from his father, from Ibn Muhayriz, from Sayyiduna Abu Mahdhurah (may Allah be pleased with him), from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), the meaning of what Ibn Jurayj related. Al-Shafi'i said: And I heard him say the iqamah, and he would say: 'Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar, ashhadu an la ilaha illallah, ashhadu anna Muhammadan rasulullah, hayya 'ala al-salah, hayya 'ala al-falah, qad qamat al-salah, qad qamat al-salah, Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar, la ilaha illallah' (Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest, I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, come to prayer, come to success, the prayer has been established, the prayer has been established, Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest, there is no god but Allah). Al-Shafi'i said: And I heard him relate the iqamah as a report just as he related the adhan.
(b) In the narration of al-Hasan bin Muhammad bin al-Sabbah al-Za'farani from Imam al-Shafi'i (may Allah have mercy on him) concerning how the adhan and the iqamah are said, the Imam said: Relying on narrations in this matter is needless effort, for the adhan is given five times every day and night in the two Mosques before the eyes of the Ansar and the Muhajirun, and the muezzins of Makkah are the family of Abu Mahdhurah. Sayyiduna Abu Mahdhurah (may Allah be pleased with him) gave the adhan for the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), who taught him the adhan and then appointed him in Makkah; and the family of Sa'd al-Qaraz gave the adhan in Madinah from the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and in the time of Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him). All of them relate the adhan, the iqamah and the tathwib at the time of Fajr, 'Al-salatu khayrun min al-nawm' (Prayer is better than sleep), as we have stated. If it were possible that this was an error on the part of all of them, while the people are present with them, and then someone came to us from the far ends of the earth to teach us, it would be permissible for him to ask about Arafah and Mina and then contradict us; and if he contradicted us about the prayer times, that would be more permissible for him than contradicting us in this evident, practised matter.
