Abdullah bin Muhayriz (may Allah have mercy on him), who was brought up in the care of Sayyiduna Abu Mahdhurah (may Allah be pleased with him), said: When I prepared to go to Syria, I said to Sayyiduna Abu Mahdhurah (may Allah be pleased with him): O uncle, I am going to Syria and I fear that I will be asked about your adhan, so tell me, O Abu Mahdhurah. He said: Very well. I set out with a group, and we were on part of the road to Hunayn. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was returning from Hunayn and met us on the way. The mu'adhdhin of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) called the adhan; we heard the mu'adhdhin's voice while we were turned towards one another, and we made a clamour, imitating him and mocking him. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) heard it and sent someone to us, until we were standing before him (peace and blessings be upon him). The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Which of you is the one whose voice I heard raised so loud?" All the people pointed at me, and they spoke the truth. He (peace and blessings be upon him) let them all go and kept me back, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Stand and call the adhan for the prayer." At that time nothing was more hateful to me than the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and what he (peace and blessings be upon him) was ordering me to do.
I stood before the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) himself taught me the adhan and said: "Say: 'Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar' (Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest), 'Ash-hadu an la ilaha illallah, ash-hadu an la ilaha illallah' (I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, I bear witness that there is no god but Allah), 'Ash-hadu anna Muhammadan rasulullah, ash-hadu anna Muhammadan rasulullah' (I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah)." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me: "Go back and raise your voice." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Say: 'Ash-hadu an la ilaha illallah, ash-hadu an la ilaha illallah' (I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, I bear witness that there is no god but Allah), 'Ash-hadu anna Muhammadan rasulullah, ash-hadu anna Muhammadan rasulullah' (I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah), 'Hayya 'alas-salah, hayya 'alas-salah' (Come to the prayer, come to the prayer), 'Hayya 'alal-falah, hayya 'alal-falah' (Come to success, come to success), 'Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar' (Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest), 'La ilaha illallah' (There is no god but Allah)." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) called me when I had completed the adhan. He (peace and blessings be upon him) gave me a small bag containing some silver; then he (peace and blessings be upon him) placed his hand on my forehead and passed it over my face, then between my breasts, then over my liver, then his (peace and blessings be upon him) hand reached my belly. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "May Allah Almighty put blessing in you and bestow blessing upon you." I said: O Messenger of Allah, permit me to give the adhan in Makkah. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I have permitted you." So everything I disliked about the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) went away, and it all turned into love for the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). I presented myself before Attab bin Usayd, the governor of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and I called the adhan for the prayer by the order of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).

Muhammad bin Abd al-Malik bin Abi Mahdhurah narrates from his father, from his grandfather, Sayyiduna Abu Mahdhurah (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: I said: "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), teach me the way of the adhan." He said: He (peace and blessings be upon him) wiped the front part of my head and said: "Say: 'Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar' (Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest), raising your voice with it; then say: 'Ash-hadu an la ilaha illallah, ash-hadu an la ilaha illallah' (I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, I bear witness that there is no god but Allah), 'Ash-hadu anna Muhammadan rasulullah, ash-hadu anna Muhammadan rasulullah' (I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah), lowering your voice with it; then raise your voice with the testimony: 'Ash-hadu an la ilaha illallah, ash-hadu an la ilaha illallah' (I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, I bear witness that there is no god but Allah), 'Ash-hadu anna Muhammadan rasulullah, ash-hadu anna Muhammadan rasulullah' (I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah), 'Hayya 'alas-salah, hayya 'alas-salah' (Come to the prayer, come to the prayer), 'Hayya 'alal-falah, hayya 'alal-falah' (Come to success, come to success). If it is the morning prayer, say: 'As-salatu khayrun minan-nawm, as-salatu khayrun minan-nawm' (Prayer is better than sleep, prayer is better than sleep), 'Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar' (Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest), 'La ilaha illallah' (There is no god but Allah)."
In some narrations of this hadith from Abu Mahdhurah, a return to the takbir after the two testimonies is reported, but that is not strong, since it contradicts the well-known narrations and the practice of the people of the Hijaz.

Ammar bin Sa'd narrates from his father, Sa'd al-Qaraz (may Allah be pleased with him), that he heard the adhan and iqamah of Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him), which the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had ordered him to give, and it is as follows:
"'Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar' (Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest), 'Ash-hadu an la ilaha illallah, ash-hadu an la ilaha illallah' (I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, I bear witness that there is no god but Allah), 'Ash-hadu anna Muhammadan rasulullah, ash-hadu anna Muhammadan rasulullah' (I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah); then he says again: 'Ash-hadu an la ilaha illallah, ash-hadu an la ilaha illallah' (I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, I bear witness that there is no god but Allah), 'Ash-hadu anna Muhammadan rasulullah, ash-hadu anna Muhammadan rasulullah' (I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah); 'Hayya 'alas-salah, hayya 'alas-salah' (Come to the prayer, come to the prayer), 'Hayya 'alal-falah, hayya 'alal-falah' (Come to success, come to success), 'Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar' (Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest), 'La ilaha illallah' (There is no god but Allah)." And he would say the iqamah once each, and 'Qad qamatis-salah' (The prayer has begun) also once.
