It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Juhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him): I came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) while he (peace and blessings be upon him) was in a red domed tent at al-Abtah. Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) came out to us with the leftover water from the ablution of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and we were splashing ourselves with the water when he gave the adhan; I began following his mouth this way and that.

Awn bin Abi Juhayfah narrates the hadith from his father, Sayyiduna Abu Juhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him), that he performed ablution and Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) gave the adhan; I kept following his mouth this way and that, and he would turn his face right and left, saying: 'Hayya 'alas-salah' (Come to the prayer), 'Hayya 'alal-falah' (Come to success).

Awn bin Abi Juhayfah (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates from his father (Sayyiduna Abu Juhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him)): I saw Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) come out to al-Abtah and give the adhan. When he reached 'Hayya 'alas-salah' (Come to the prayer), 'Hayya 'alal-falah' (Come to success), he turned his neck to the right and the left, but did not turn around. Then he went in and brought out the short spear ('anazah), and he narrated the rest of the hadith. This is how Qays narrated it; al-Hajjaj bin Artat (may Allah have mercy on him) differed from him and said that he turned around in his adhan.

(a) Awn bin Abi Juhayfah narrates from his father (may Allah be pleased with him): I came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) while he (peace and blessings be upon him) was at al-Abtah in a red domed tent. Then Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) came out and set down water for ablution for the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him); then he gave the adhan, put his fingers in his ears and turned around in his adhan. (b) It is possible that the narrator al-Hajjaj meant by turning around the turning of the face, and this possibility agrees with all the other narrators. (c) Al-Hajjaj bin Artat (may Allah have mercy on him) is not a proof (hujjah); may Allah Almighty forgive us and him. (d) Abd al-Razzaq (may Allah have mercy on him) narrated from Sufyan al-Thawri (may Allah have mercy on him), from Awn bin Abi Juhayfah, with these words inserted (mudraj) into the hadith. Sufyan (may Allah have mercy on him) narrated these words in al-Jami' "from a man" whom he did not name, from Awn.
(e) Hammad bin Salamah (may Allah have mercy on him) narrated it from Awn bin Abi Juhayfah as mursal, without the words "from his father". And Allah knows best.
