It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that when a woman among the Jews menstruated, they would put her out of the house; they would neither eat nor drink with her, nor live with her in the house. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was asked about her (the menstruating woman), so Allah Almighty revealed: "And they ask you about menstruation. Say: It is a harm, so keep away from women during menstruation" [Surah al-Baqarah: 222] to the end. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Live with them in the houses and do everything except intercourse." The Jews said: This man does not leave any matter of ours without opposing us in it. Sayyiduna Usayd bin Hudayr and Abbad bin Bishr (may Allah be pleased with them both) came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah, the Jews are saying such and such; shall we not then have intercourse with them during menstruation? The face of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) changed, until we thought that he (peace and blessings be upon him) was angry with them both. The two of them went out, and on their way they were met by a gift of milk being brought for the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). He sent someone after them and gave them milk to drink, and then we were sure that he (peace and blessings be upon him) was not angry with them.
(b) In the hadith of Abu Dawud al-Tayalisi it is: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered that they eat and drink with them and live with them in the houses and do whatever they wish except intercourse; and he related the rest of the hadith with the same meaning.

It is narrated from Nudbah, the freed slave-woman of Sayyidah Maymunah (may Allah be pleased with her), that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would have bodily contact (mubasharah) with his wives while they were menstruating, when they had on a waist-wrap reaching to the middle of the thigh or to the knees, wrapped tightly in it.

It is narrated from al-Zuhri (may Allah have mercy on him) that he said: Habib (may Allah have mercy on him), the freed slave of Urwah bin al-Zubayr (may Allah have mercy on him), informed me that Sayyidah Maymunah (may Allah be pleased with her) sent her slave-woman Nudbah to Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) with a letter. She reached him, and his bed was set apart from his wife's. She returned to Sayyidah Maymunah (may Allah be pleased with her), delivered her letter, and then told her the whole story. At this Sayyidah Maymunah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: "Go to his wife and ask her about this matter." She went back to her and asked her, and she told her that when she menstruates, Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) moves his bed away from her. Maymunah (may Allah be pleased with her) sent a message to Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), was angry with him, and said: "Do you turn away from the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)? By Allah, a wife of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would wrap a cloth round herself reaching to the middle of her thighs, and then he (peace and blessings be upon him) would have bodily contact with the whole of (the rest of) her body."

The paternal aunt of Umarah bin Ghurab said to Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her): When one of us menstruates, she and her husband have only one bed. She said: I will tell you what the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did. He (peace and blessings be upon him) came in and then went to the masjid. Imam Abu Dawud (may Allah have mercy on him) said: meaning the masjid of his house. He (peace and blessings be upon him) did not leave it until my eyes overcame me (that is, I fell asleep), and the cold troubled him (peace and blessings be upon him). He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Come close to me." I said: I am menstruating. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Even so; uncover your thighs." So I uncovered my thighs, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) placed his cheek and chest on my thigh, and I bent over him until he (peace and blessings be upon him) became warm and fell asleep.
