The most wretched of the wretched is one upon whom poverty in this world and punishment in the Hereafter are combined

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) supplicating: 'Allahumma ahyini miskinan, wa tawaffani miskinan, wahshurni fi zumrat al-masakin' (O Allah, keep me alive in a state of humble poverty, cause me to die in a state of humble poverty, and gather me among the company of the poor). (Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:) For the most wretched of the wretched is the one upon whom the poverty of this world and the punishment of the Hereafter are both combined.
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

It is narrated from Abu Umayyah al-Sha'bani that he said: I asked Sayyiduna Abu Tha'labah (may Allah be pleased with him) about this verse: "O you who believe, take care of your own selves; the one who goes astray cannot harm you when you are rightly guided" [Surah al-Ma'idah: 105]. He said: "You have asked one who is well informed about it. I myself asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) about it, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'O Abu Tha'labah, enjoin good and forbid evil; but when you see avarice being obeyed, desires being followed, the world being preferred (over the Hereafter), and you see a matter that you have no choice but to pursue, then take care of your own self and leave them and their common folk. For ahead of you are days of patience; patience in them will be like grasping a burning coal (in the fist). The one who does good deeds in those days will have the reward of fifty people who do deeds like his.'"

Mutarrif bin Abdullah narrates from his father that he said: I came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) while he was reciting: "Competition in (worldly) increase diverts you, until you visit the graves" [Surah al-Takathur: 1-2]. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The son of Adam says: 'My wealth, my wealth!' Yet (O man), of your wealth you have nothing except what you ate and consumed, or wore and wore out, or gave in charity and sent ahead (for yourself)."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Bishr bin Jahhash al-Qurashi (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) spat into his palm, then placed his finger on it and said: "Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, says: 'O son of Adam, can you render Me incapable when I created you from something like this? Then, when I fashioned you and made you well-proportioned, you walked (upon the earth) proudly, you amassed wealth and withheld (from fulfilling rights), until, when (the soul) reached the throat, you began to say: Now I will give charity. But where is the time for charity now?'"
