It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) supplicating: 'Allahumma ahyini miskinan, wa tawaffani miskinan, wahshurni fi zumrat al-masakin' (O Allah, keep me alive in a state of humble poverty, cause me to die in a state of humble poverty, and gather me among the company of the poor). (Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:) For the most wretched of the wretched is the one upon whom the poverty of this world and the punishment of the Hereafter are both combined.
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is weak.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The reason is Khalid bin Yazid bin Abi Malik.
Reference / Source: Al-Tabarani recorded it in full and in abridged form in "al-Awsat" (9269), "Musnad al-Shamiyyin" (1615) and "al-Du'a'" (1426); Ibn 'Adi in "al-Kamil" (3/ 11-12); Abu al-Qasim bin Bishran in "al-Amali" (412); al-Bayhaqi in "al-Sunan al-Kubra" (7/ 13) and "Shu'ab al-Iman" (5111, 10024); and Ibn 'Asakir in "Tarikh Dimashq" (63/ 112) and his "Mu'jam" (1555), through various routes from Sulayman bin Abd al-Rahman al-Dimashqi, with this same chain.
Reference / Source: The first part of this hadith was recorded by Ibn Majah (4126) and others via Abu Khalid al-Ahmar Sulayman bin Hayyan al-Azdi, from Yazid bin Sinan, from Abu al-Mubarak, from 'Ata'.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Yazid bin Sinan (Abu Farwah al-Rahawi) is weak, and Abu al-Mubarak is majhul (unknown).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Abu Khalid al-Ahmar was contradicted by Muhammad bin Yazid bin Sinan (who is himself weak): he narrated it from his father Abu Farwah Yazid bin Sinan, from 'Ata', from Abu Sa'id al-Khudri, thereby dropping "Abu al-Mubarak" from the middle.
Reference / Source: Its first part was recorded by al-Tabarani in "al-Du'a'" (1425) via Yazid bin Muhammad bin Yazid bin Sinan, and its second part by al-Quda'i in "Musnad al-Shihab" (1126) via Ahmad bin Muhammad bin Ya'qub al-Darimi; both of them (Yazid and Ahmad) narrate it from Muhammad bin Yazid bin Sinan.
Reference / Source: Ibn Abi Hatim recorded it in "al-'Ilal" (2333), Ibn al-A'rabi in "al-Mu'jam" (1017), al-Tabarani in "al-Awsat" (1887) and Ibn 'Adi (6/ 432) via al-Madi bin Muhammad al-Ghafiqi, from Hisham bin Hassan, from al-Hasan, from Abu Salamah, from Abu Sa'id al-Khudri, that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Shall I not tell you of the most wretched of the wretched?" They said: Yes indeed, O Messenger of Allah. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The one upon whom the poverty of this world and the punishment of the Hereafter are combined."
Note / Clarification: The narration of Ibn Abi Hatim does not mention Abu Salamah, and in "al-Kamil" (the name of Abu Salamah) has been distorted into "Isma'il".
Important point: Al-Tabarani said: No one narrated this hadith from Hisham bin Hassan except al-Madi bin Muhammad, and Ibn Wahb is alone in narrating it (from al-Madi).
Grading: Abu Hatim al-Razi said: This hadith is "batil" (false), and I do not know al-Madi. Ibn 'Adi said: It is "not preserved" (ghayr mahfuz); most of what al-Madi narrates is not corroborated, and I do not know anyone who narrated from him except Ibn Wahb.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: It has a supporting report from the hadith of Ibn 'Umar in al-Ruyani's "Musnad" (1412), and its chain consists of weak narrators one after another. Also, its first part has a supporting report from the hadith of Anas in al-Tirmidhi (2350), and its chain too is weak.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: And (a supporting report) from the hadith of 'Ubadah in al-Tabarani's "al-Du'a'" (1427) and al-Bayhaqi (127), but in its chain is 'Ubayd bin Ziyad, who is unknown.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Its second part has a supporting report from the hadith of Anas in Ibn Hibban's "al-Majruhin" (1/ 144), and its chain is "talif" (ruined); in it is Ahmad bin Ibrahim al-Muzani, whom Ibn Hibban accused of fabrication.
