It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do not leave fire burning in your houses, for it is an enemy." Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) would not leave any fire burning in the house before sleeping. He was the last of the household to sleep; he would pray, and when he finished he would not sleep until he had put out the lamp.
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it.
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both): A mouse came and began pulling the wick of the lamp. The slave girl started to shoo it away, but the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Leave it." It brought the wick and dropped it in front of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) on the mat on which he was sitting, and it burned a spot the size of a dirham. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When you go to sleep, put out your lamps, for Satan prompts creatures like this to such acts so as to burn you."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.
