It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do not leave fire burning in your houses, for it is an enemy." Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) would not leave any fire burning in the house before sleeping. He was the last of the household to sleep; he would pray, and when he finished he would not sleep until he had put out the lamp.
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it.
Grading: Its chain is sahih. Note / Clarification: The name of Abu Yahya bin Abi Masarrah is 'Abdullah bin Ahmad bin Zakariyya. Reference / Source: Imam al-Bukhari narrated it in the same way in "al-Adab al-Mufrad" (1226) through the chain of Sa'id bin Abi Maryam from Nafi' bin Yazid. Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad 9/ (5641) narrated it by way of Sa'id bin Abi Ayyub from Yazid bin al-Had. Technical note / Defect ('illah): This same chain occurs in "al-Adab al-Mufrad" (1225), but there it was made a narration of 'Abdullah bin 'Umar from 'Umar as his own saying (mawquf), and it was not raised to the Prophet (marfu'); this is open to question. Technical note / Defect ('illah): In Imam Ahmad's narration 9/ (5396) from Ibn Lahi'ah, "'Abdullah bin Dinar" is mentioned in place of "Nafi'", which is a result of Ibn Lahi'ah's poor memory. Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad 8/ (4515) and (4546) and 9 (5028), al-Bukhari (6293), Muslim (2015), Abu Dawud (5246), Ibn Majah (3769) and al-Tirmidhi (1813) narrated it with a similar meaning by way of Salim bin 'Abdullah bin 'Umar from his father (Ibn 'Umar).
