Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 7959

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both): A mouse came and began pulling the wick of the lamp. The slave girl started to shoo it away, but the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Leave it." It brought the wick and dropped it in front of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) on the mat on which he was sitting, and it burned a spot the size of a dirham. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When you go to sleep, put out your lamps, for Satan prompts creatures like this to such acts so as to burn you."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The words in brackets had dropped out (been omitted) from the manuscripts.

Technical note / Defect ('illah): The words between the brackets were not in the manuscripts; we have established them from the other sources of takhrij.

Grading: Hasan li-ghayrihi (hasan due to supporting evidence).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Its chain is "layyin" (soft, weak). This chain of Asbat bin Nasr from Simak from 'Ikrimah is not strong. Imam al-Saji (may Allah have mercy on him) says that Asbat bin Nasr narrates hadiths from Simak in which he is not corroborated. The narrator 'Amr bin Talhah mentioned here refers to 'Amr bin Hammad bin Talhah.
Reference / Source: Imam Abu Dawud (5247) narrated it via Sulayman bin 'Abd al-Rahman al-Tammar, and Ibn Hibban (5519) by way of Ahmad bin Adam; both of them narrate it from 'Amr bin Hammad bin Talhah with this same chain.
Details of the narration: Imam al-Bukhari (6294) and Imam Muslim (2016) narrated the hadith of Abu Musa al-Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) that a house in Madinah burned down at night along with its occupants; when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was told of this incident, he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "This fire is indeed your enemy, so when you go to sleep, put it out." Also, Imam al-Bukhari (3316) mentioned in the narration of Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him): "Put out the lamps when going to sleep, for the little mischief-maker (fuwaysiqah) may drag the burning wick and burn the people of the house." Here "fuwaysiqah" means the mouse.
