(1). It is narrated from Sayyiduna Talhah bin Ubaydullah (may Allah be pleased with him) that when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saw the new moon, he would say: "O Allah, bring it upon us with blessing, faith, safety and Islam. (O moon!) My Lord and your Lord is Allah."

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Hasan li-ghayrihi (hasan due to supporting evidence). Technical note / Defect ('illah): This chain is weak; its narrator Sulayman bin Sufyan al-Madani and his shaykh Bilal bin Yahya are both weak. Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad (1397) and Imam al-Tirmidhi (3451) narrated this narration by way of Abu 'Amir al-'Aqadi, with this same chain. Important point: Imam al-Tirmidhi (may Allah have mercy on him) said about this narration that it is "hasan gharib". Corroborating chains and supporting reports: In this chapter there is a narration from Ibn 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) in Sunan al-Darimi (1729) and Sahih Ibn Hibban (888). Technical note / Defect ('illah): Its chain contains a narrator named 'Abd al-Rahman bin 'Uthman, whom Imam Abu Hatim declared weak, while Ibn Hibban mentioned him in his book "al-Thiqat". Several narrators narrated from his father 'Uthman; Abu Hatim's statement about him is that he is a "shaykh whose hadith is written down", and Ibn Hibban also included him in "al-Thiqat". Corroborating chains and supporting reports: 'Uthman bin Abi 'Atikah narrated it from one of their shaykhs, who traced it back to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) (marfu'); it is recorded in Ibn al-Sunni's "'Amal al-Yawm wa al-Laylah" (646). Abu Nu'aym, narrating it in "Ma'rifat al-Sahabah" (2310), gave the name of this shaykh as "Ziyad". After this narration Ziyad said that six Companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), who had heard it directly from him (peace and blessings be upon him), consistently recited this supplication. Technical note / Defect ('illah): The narrator "Ziyad" could not be identified (i.e. he is majhul). Details of the narration: It is reported from 'Ali (may Allah be pleased with him): "When one of you sees the new moon, let him not raise his head (much) towards it; rather, it is enough to say: 'My Lord and your Lord is Allah.'" Reference / Source: Ibn Abi Shaybah (3/ 98) narrated it. Technical note / Defect ('illah): All its narrators are thiqah (trustworthy) except 'Ubayd bin 'Amr al-Kharifi, about whom Ibn Sa'd said that he was well known but narrated few hadiths.
