Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 7961

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that when it rained from the sky, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would uncover his back from his garment until the rain touched him (peace and blessings be upon him). He (peace and blessings be upon him) was asked: Why do you do this? He said: "Because it (the rain) has only just come (down) from its Lord, the Mighty and Majestic."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Muslim, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: In the manuscript there is a corruption of the word here, and it has been written by mistake as "al-San'ani".

Grading: Its chain is "jayyid" (good) on account of the presence of Ja'far bin Sulayman al-Duba'i.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): However, the words "'an zahrihi" (he uncovered his back) in the narration were not mentioned in Ja'far's hadith by anyone other than Imam al-Hakim.
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad (12365, 13820), Muslim (898), Abu Dawud (5100), al-Nasa'i (1850) and Ibn Hibban (6135) narrated this narration by various routes from Ja'far bin Sulayman, with this same chain, but none of them mentioned the words "'an zahrihi".
Details of the narration: Abu Kamil Fudayl bin Husayn al-Jahdari narrated it from Ja'far al-Duba'i, with this chain, in these words: "hasara 'an mankibayhi" (he (peace and blessings be upon him) uncovered his shoulders).
Reference / Source: Ibn 'Adi narrated it in "al-Kamil" (2/ 149), and Imam al-Dhahabi in "Kitab al-'Arsh" (96) and "al-'Uluww" (95).
Note / Clarification: On this basis, the words "'an zahrihi" in Imam al-Hakim's narration are to be understood as "uncovering his (peace and blessings be upon him) two blessed shoulders".
General principle: Imam al-Nawawi (may Allah have mercy on him) says that the phrase "hadithu 'ahdin bi-rabbihi" (fresh from its Lord) means that it has only just been created. Its sense is that rain is a mercy of Allah that has only just been freshly created, and for this reason blessing is sought from it.
