Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The word "Abu" has dropped out of the manuscripts.
Note / Clarification: Here "Abu 'Asim" refers to al-Dahhak bin Makhlad al-Nabil.
Grading: There is no harm in the narrators of this chain; however, Muhammad bin 'Ajlan was contradicted in the wording, and he merged one hadith into another.
Note / Clarification: Abu Qilabah refers to 'Abd al-Malik bin Muhammad al-Raqashi.
Reference / Source: Imam al-Bukhari narrated it in "al-Adab al-Mufrad" (1230) and Ibn 'Abd al-Barr in "al-Tamhid" 12/ 178-179 through the chain of Yahya al-Qattan from Muhammad bin 'Ajlan from al-Qa'qa' bin Hakim from Jabir, as marfu', with these words: "Beware of night conversation (staying up) after the night has become quiet, for none of you knows what Allah spreads out of His creation; shut the doors, tie up the water-skins, turn over the vessels and put out the lamps."
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Ibn 'Ajlan is alone in inserting the prohibition of night conversation into the hadith of al-Qa'qa' from Jabir; however, this same thing also came in the narration of Sufyan bin 'Uyaynah from Abu al-Zubayr from Jabir, and Sufyan too is alone in this addition among the students of Abu al-Zubayr.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Ja'far bin 'Abdullah bin al-Hakam contradicted Ibn 'Ajlan in the wording and narrated it from al-Qa'qa' with these words: "Cover the vessels and tie up the water-skins, for there is a night in the year in which a pestilence descends; it does not pass by an uncovered vessel or an untied water-skin without entering it."
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad 23/ (14829) and Muslim (2014/99) narrated it by way of Yahya bin Sa'id al-Ansari.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Among the students of Jabir, al-Qa'qa' is alone in mentioning the story of the pestilence that descends from the sky. We have set out its other routes under numbers (7400, 7955, 7956).
Grading: The narration of Sufyan bin 'Uyaynah from Abu al-Zubayr from Jabir (Musnad al-Humaydi: 1310) has a similar meaning to Ibn 'Ajlan's narration (with al-Bukhari in "al-Adab" and Ibn 'Abd al-Barr), but it is "shadh", because no other student of Abu al-Zubayr mentioned night conversation (samar) in his narration. Among them are eight major trustworthy narrators: Zuhayr bin Mu'awiyah (Ahmad 23/ 15256, Muslim 2012/96 and 2013, Abu Dawud 2604), Imam Malik (Muslim 2012/96, al-Tirmidhi 1812, Ibn Hibban 1271), al-Layth bin Sa'd (Muslim 2012/96, Ibn Majah 3410), Sufyan al-Thawri (Muslim 2012/96), Fitr bin Khalifah (Ahmad 22/ 14228, Ibn Hibban 1271), Hammad bin Salamah (Ahmad 23/ 14899), Hisham al-Dastuwa'i (Ahmad 23/ 15015) and 'Abd al-Malik bin Abi Sulayman (Ibn Majah 360). All of them narrated it from Abu al-Zubayr but did not mention samar.
Reference / Source: In the chapter on the prohibition of night conversation after 'isha', there is the narration of Abu Barzah al-Aslami (may Allah be pleased with him) in al-Bukhari (599) and Muslim (647) (235): "The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) liked to delay 'isha', and he disliked sleeping before it and talking after it."
Reference / Source: From Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) it is reported, with Imam Ahmad 6/ (3686): "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) disapproved to us of night conversation (staying up) after 'isha'."
Note / Clarification: At that place we have also mentioned all the remaining hadiths of this chapter.
