Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 7956

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Keep your children (indoors) until the first darkness of Isha has passed, for it is an hour in which the devils spread out."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Muslim, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In manuscripts (Z) and (B) this word has been corrupted into "hin", whereas we have corrected it in light of manuscript (M) and the other sources of takhrij and retained it in the text.

Technical note / Defect ('illah): In the manuscripts the letter "ra'" has been written in place of the letter "waw", and its meaning is not clear to us; while with Imam Abu Ya'la, and via him Ibn Hibban, this word is with a dotted "zay" (z). What we have adopted is from the printed edition, and it is likewise in "al-Musnad", and 'Allamah Ibn al-Athir and others explained it accordingly; he says that it means the beginning of something, like its surge (fawrah), just as the "faw'ah" of perfume is the first scent that wafts from it.

Grading: This hadith is sahih, and its chain is qawi (strong) on account of Habib al-Mu'allim (Habib bin Za'idah).
Note / Clarification: Hajjaj refers to Hajjaj bin al-Minhal, Hammad to Hammad bin Salamah, and 'Ata' to 'Ata' bin Abi Rabah.
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad narrated it in 23/ (14898) via 'Affan bin Muslim, and Ibn Hibban in (1276) by way of Ibrahim bin al-Hajjaj; both of them narrate it from Hammad bin Salamah with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Imam al-Bukhari (3280, 3304, 5623) and Muslim (2012/97) narrated it by way of Ibn Jurayj, while Imam Ahmad (15167), al-Bukhari (3316) and Abu Dawud (3733) narrated it by way of Kathir bin Shinzir.
Details of the narration: Both of these narrators report it from 'Ata' bin Abi Rabah, from Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him). The wording of Ibn Jurayj's narration is: "When the darkness of night falls, keep your children in (the houses), for the devils spread out at that time; then when an hour of the night ('isha') has passed, let them go." The wording of Kathir's narration is: "Gather in your children at 'isha' (or evening), for the jinn spread out and snatch at that time."
Note / Clarification: We have mentioned all the other routes of this hadith from Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) in the takhrij of the previous hadith.
Important point: About the hadith's words "takhtariqu fiha al-shayatin", 'Allamah al-Munawi says in "Fayd al-Qadir" 1/ 180 that it means the devils spreading out. 'Allamah al-San'ani says in "al-Tanwir" 1/ 404 that it is from "ikhtiraq", which means crossing a wilderness or desert.
General principle: In this hadith it is forbidden to leave children outside at the beginning of the time of 'isha', because it is the time when the devils spread out and they may harm the children.
