Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 7955

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When you hear the barking of dogs and the braying of donkeys at night, seek refuge with Allah from Satan the accursed, for they see what you do not see. When night settles in, go out less, for Allah spreads whatever He wills of His creation. Shut the doors and mention the name of Allah, for Satan does not open a door that has been shut with the name of Allah. Tie up the mouths of the waterskins, cover the jars, and turn the vessels upside down."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Muslim, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it with this wording.
