It is narrated from Sayyidah Asma bint Umays (may Allah be pleased with her); she said: The illness of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) began in the house of Sayyidah Maymunah (may Allah be pleased with her). His (peace and blessings be upon him) pain grew severe until he fainted. She said: Then the women consulted one another about pouring medicine into his mouth (ladd), and they poured it into his mouth. When he (peace and blessings be upon him) recovered consciousness, he said: "What is this?! Is this the doing of women who came from there?" And he (peace and blessings be upon him) pointed towards the land of Abyssinia (because treatment in this manner was common there), and among those women was Asma bint Umays (may Allah be pleased with her). They said: O Messenger of Allah, we feared that you had dhat al-janb (pleurisy). He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "That is a (painful) disease with which Allah would not afflict me. Let no one remain in this house without having medicine poured into his mouth (as recompense), except the uncle of the Messenger of Allah," meaning Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him). (The narrator said:) So on that day Sayyidah Maymunah (may Allah be pleased with her) also had the medicine poured into her mouth, even though she was fasting, because of the firm command of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him).
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it.

It is narrated from Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her); she said: O my nephew, the way I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) honour his uncle (Sayyiduna Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him) was a truly amazing thing. It was that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) suffered from pain in the side, which became very severe. We used to think that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had pain of the kidney vein, and we did not know that it should be called al-khasirah (pain in the flank). One day he (peace and blessings be upon him) had this pain so severely that he fainted, and we feared for his life, and the people gathered around him in alarm. We supposed that he had dhat al-janb (pleurisy), so we poured medicine into (the side of) his mouth (ladadnahu). Then, when the distress of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) eased and he recovered consciousness, he (peace and blessings be upon him) perceived that medicine had been poured into his mouth, and he found the taste of that medicine. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Did you suppose that Allah Almighty would inflict this disease (dhat al-janb) upon me? Allah would never inflict it upon me. By the One in whose hand is my soul, let no one who is in this house be left without being given this medicine (as recompense), except my uncle." Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: Then I saw them all being given that same medicine one by one. All the men who were present in the house that day (and Aishah, may Allah be pleased with her, would mention their virtue) were made to drink that medicine, until the turn of the wives of the Prophet came, and they too were given that medicine one by one, until the turn came to one woman among us (Abu al-Zinad said: I think she was Sayyidah Maymunah, may Allah be pleased with her, while other people say she was Sayyidah Umm Salamah, may Allah be pleased with her), and she said: By Allah, I am fasting. But we said: By Allah, how wrong you were to think that we would leave you when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had sworn an oath! So we made her drink that medicine too.
