Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 7630

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Ubayy bin Umm Haram (may Allah be pleased with him), who prayed with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) towards both qiblahs; he said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Hold fast to senna and sannut, for in both of them there is healing for every disease except sam." It was asked: O Messenger of Allah, and what is sam? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Death." Ibrahim bin Abi Ablah said: Sannut means shibitt (the herb known as dill). And Amr bin Bakr said that others hold that sannut is the honey that is kept in a waterskin, as the poet said: "They are like ghee with sannut (honey), there is no deceit in them, and they protect their neighbour from being left alone."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Important point: In the handwritten manuscripts the word was written "sam" (poison), while the correct word in the text has been established from al-Dhahabi's "Talkhis".

Grading: This narration is "hasan li-ghayrihi" (hasan on account of other supporting reports).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Although the narrator Amr bin Bakr al-Saksaki is "matruk" (abandoned), he is not alone in transmitting this report from Ibrahim bin Abi Ablah; rather Shaddad bin Aws al-Ansari corroborated him, as will come, and from the side of Shaddad this chain is "hasan".
Reference / Source: Ibn Majah recorded it (3457) by way of Ibrahim bin Muhammad al-Firyabi, from Amr bin Bakr al-Saksaki, with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Ibn Qani' recorded it in "Mu'jam al-Sahabah" 2/ 107, Abu Nu'aym in "Ma'rifat al-Sahabah" (4008) and (6690), al-Bayhaqi in "al-Sunan" 9/ 346 and al-Mizzi in "Tahdhib al-Kamal" 21/ 551-552, through various routes from Shaddad bin Abd al-Rahman al-Ansari (who is from the descendants of Shaddad bin Aws), from Ibrahim bin Abi Ablah.
Details of the narration: In the second narration of Abu Nu'aym and in the narration of al-Mizzi, Amr al-Saksaki is also mentioned (as a co-narrator) alongside Shaddad.
Grading: This chain is "hasan", because a group narrated from Shaddad, and Ibn Hibban said about him in his book "al-Thiqat" 6/ 441 that he is "mustaqim al-hadith" (sound in hadith).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: On this topic there is also a narration from Anas bin Malik, found with al-Nasa'i (7533), and its chain is "hasan".
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: It is also narrated from Umm Salamah, found in al-Tabarani's "al-Kabir" 23/ (952) and Abu Nu'aym's "al-Tibb al-Nabawi" (176).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In its chain is a narrator named "Rukayh bin Abi Ubaydah" from whom only one narrator narrated, so he is "majhul" (unknown), although Ibn Hibban mentioned him in "al-Thiqat".

Important point: In the handwritten manuscripts the word "alas" was corrupted to "khayr", and the word "yataqarrada" was changed to "yatajarrada"; we have corrected it from the sources of takhrij and established it.
Note / Clarification: Al-Bayhaqi in "al-Sunan al-Kubra" quoted its explanation from Amr al-Saksaki himself: "la alasa fihim" means there is no deceit among them, and "an yataqarrada" means that their neighbour will not be humiliated or left alone.
Note / Clarification: "Al-shibit" (dill) is a plant whose leaves and seeds are used to flavour food.
