Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 7629

It is narrated from Sayyidah Asma bint Umays (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) asked her: "What do you use to clear the bowels (as a laxative)?" She said: I used to use shubrum. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "That is very hot and severe (burning)." She said: Then I used senna, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If there were anything that contained a cure for death, it would be senna."

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is da'if (weak).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Utbah bin Abd Allah al-Taymi is "majhul" (unknown), as we explained in the previous hadith, and between him and Asma' there is a mawla (freed slave) of Ma'mar al-Taymi, as has come in some narrations, and he too is majhul. Abu Bakr al-Hanafi refers to Abd al-Kabir bin Abd al-Majid.
Reference / Source: Al-Tabarani recorded this narration in "al-Mu'jam al-Kabir" 24 / (398) and al-Bayhaqi in "al-Sunan al-Kubra" 9/ 346, through two routes from Abu Bakr al-Hanafi, with this same chain.
Details of the narration: This narration will come later with the author (al-Hakim) under number (8437) by way of Yahya bin Ja'far, from Abu Bakr al-Hanafi.
Reference / Source: Al-Tirmidhi recorded it under number (2081) by way of Muhammad bin Bakr al-Bursani, from Abd al-Hamid bin Ja'far, from Utbah bin Abd Allah, from Asma'. Al-Tirmidhi declared it "gharib".
Reference / Source: Ahmad recorded it in the "Musnad" 45 / (27080) and Ibn Majah (3461) by way of Abu Usamah Hammad bin Usamah, from Abd al-Hamid bin Ja'far, from Zur'ah bin Abd al-Rahman, from a mawla (freed slave) of Ma'mar al-Taymi, from Asma'.
Note / Clarification: His (peace and blessings be upon him) words "harrun jarrun" (intensely hot): the word "jarr" is brought in as a rhyming follower of "harr" for emphasis.
