Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates from Sayyidah Asma bint Umays (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came to her one day while she was pounding shubrum (a purgative herb). He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "What do you do with it?" She said: We give it to so-and-so to drink (so that his bowels are cleared). He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It is a disease (that is, extremely harsh and harmful)." (The narrator said:) Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) came again, and she had senna (senna of Makkah) with her. He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "What do you do with this?" She said: So-and-so drinks it. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If there were anything that could ward off death, or be of benefit against death, it would be senna."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Grading: Its chain is da'if (weak). We do not know Sa'id bin Uqbah al-Zuraqi. Technical note / Defect ('illah): The narrators differ over the name of Zur'ah bin Abd Allah: Sa'id bin Uqbah (as here) called him "Zur'ah bin Abd Allah bin Ziyad"; Abd al-Hamid bin Ja'far al-Ansari, in the narration of Hammad bin Salamah from him, called him "Zur'ah bin Abd al-Rahman"; while in the narrations of Muhammad bin Bakr al-Bursani and Abu Bakr al-Hanafi from him he is called "Utbah bin Abd Allah". He (Zur'ah) is majhul (unknown), and his narration from Umar bin al-Khattab is mursal (disconnected). Reference / Source: Abu Nu'aym recorded it in "al-Tibb al-Nabawi" (610) by way of Sulayman bin Ahmad al-Tabarani, from Yahya bin Uthman, with this same chain. Corroborating chains and supporting reports: On this topic there is a narration from A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) in Abu Nu'aym (611), whose chain is da'if. Note / Clarification: "Al-subrum": a grain resembling chickpeas, which is soaked and its water drunk as a remedy. It has also been said that it is a kind of "shih" (wormwood). This was said by Ibn al-Athir. Note / Clarification: Al-sana: a laxative plant, well known as Makkan senna (al-sana al-makki).
