It is narrated from Sayyidah Asma bint Umays (may Allah be pleased with her); she said: The illness of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) began in the house of Sayyidah Maymunah (may Allah be pleased with her). His (peace and blessings be upon him) pain grew severe until he fainted. She said: Then the women consulted one another about pouring medicine into his mouth (ladd), and they poured it into his mouth. When he (peace and blessings be upon him) recovered consciousness, he said: "What is this?! Is this the doing of women who came from there?" And he (peace and blessings be upon him) pointed towards the land of Abyssinia (because treatment in this manner was common there), and among those women was Asma bint Umays (may Allah be pleased with her). They said: O Messenger of Allah, we feared that you had dhat al-janb (pleurisy). He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "That is a (painful) disease with which Allah would not afflict me. Let no one remain in this house without having medicine poured into his mouth (as recompense), except the uncle of the Messenger of Allah," meaning Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him). (The narrator said:) So on that day Sayyidah Maymunah (may Allah be pleased with her) also had the medicine poured into her mouth, even though she was fasting, because of the firm command of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him).
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Important point: Manuscripts (S) and (M) have the word "maradihi" (his illness).
Important point: In the handwritten manuscripts this word was written "baqin", while the correct word in the text has been established from "Talkhis al-Dhahabi".
Grading: This is "sahih li-ghayrihi", and overall all the narrators of this chain are thiqah (trustworthy). Technical note / Defect ('illah): Among the students of al-Zuhri, only Ma'mar bin Rashid narrated it as "connected" (mawsul) with the mention of Asma' bint Umays, while al-Zuhri's other students narrated it from Abu Bakr bin Abd al-Rahman bin al-Harith as "mursal" (without mention of a Companion), and its being mursal is what is correct, as Abu Hatim and Abu Zur'ah al-Razi stated explicitly in "al-Ilal" (2520). However, Ya'qub bin Sufyan al-Fasawi mentioned that Abd Allah bin al-Mubarak narrated it from Ma'mar as "mursal" too, which the two Razis (Abu Hatim and Abu Zur'ah) did not mention. It is feared that Ibn al-Mubarak treated the narration of Ma'mar like the narration of Yunus and reported it as mursal. And Allah knows best. Reference / Source: Ahmad (27469) and Ibn Hibban (6587) recorded it by way of Abd al-Razzaq al-San'ani, with this same chain. Reference / Source: Ya'qub bin Sufyan recorded it in "al-Ma'rifah wa al-Tarikh" 1/ 510 by way of Ali bin al-Hasan bin Shaqiq, from Abd Allah bin al-Mubarak, from Ma'mar bin Rashid, from al-Zuhri, from Abu Bakr bin Abd al-Rahman, as "mursal", that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) fell ill … and so on. Reference / Source: Ya'qub bin Sufyan recorded it at 1/ 510 by way of four narrators: Shu'ayb bin Abi Hamzah, Ubayd Allah bin Abi Ziyad, Yunus bin Yazid al-Ayli and Uqayl bin Khalid; all four of them narrated it from al-Zuhri, from Abu Bakr bin Abd al-Rahman, as "mursal". Technical note / Defect ('illah): Here Ma'mar bin Rashid has been joined (as a co-narrator) with Yunus bin Yazid al-Ayli (i.e. a mursal narration is also reported from Ma'mar). Note / Clarification: See also the next narration. (2213). Corroborating chains and supporting reports: A supporting report (shahid) for this incident is the hadith of A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her), found in Sahih al-Bukhari (4458) and Sahih Muslim (2213).
