It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that Abu Talib was repairing (the well of) Zamzam, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was among those carrying stones (for the work); at that time he (peace and blessings be upon him) was a boy. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) took off his waist-wrapper and placed it on his shoulder so as to protect himself from the rubbing of the stones (which exposed his private parts). Abu Talib was told: "Attend to your nephew; he has fainted." When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) recovered from his faint, Abu Talib asked him (peace and blessings be upon him) about it, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Someone came to me wearing white clothes and said to me: 'Cover your private parts.'" Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: This was the first sign of prophethood that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saw - that he (peace and blessings be upon him) was told: 'Cover your private parts.' And from that day on, his (peace and blessings be upon him) private parts were never seen (by anyone).
This hadith is sahih al-isnad (its chain is authentic), but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it. Its supporting witness is the narration of Sayyiduna Abu al-Tufayl (may Allah be pleased with him).
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu al-Tufayl (may Allah be pleased with him) that when the House (of Allah) was being built, the people were carrying stones, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was also carrying stones with them. He (peace and blessings be upon him) took his cloth and placed it on his shoulder (to protect himself from the rubbing of the stones), and a voice called out (from the unseen): "Do not uncover your private parts." So he (peace and blessings be upon him) threw down the stone and put on his cloth.

Bahz bin Hakim narrates from his father, from his grandfather (Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah bin Haydah (may Allah be pleased with him)), who said: I said: "O Messenger of Allah, what is the ruling concerning covering our private parts - what of them must we cover and what may we leave?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Guard your private parts except from your wife or from what your right hand possesses (a slave-woman)." I said: "Tell me, what if people are (crowded) together with one another?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If you are able to ensure that no one sees them, then let no one see them at all." I said: "Tell me, what if one of us is alone?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Allah Almighty is more deserving that one should be modest before Him." And he (peace and blessings be upon him) placed his hand over his private parts.
