Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 7543

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that Abu Talib was repairing (the well of) Zamzam, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was among those carrying stones (for the work); at that time he (peace and blessings be upon him) was a boy. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) took off his waist-wrapper and placed it on his shoulder so as to protect himself from the rubbing of the stones (which exposed his private parts). Abu Talib was told: "Attend to your nephew; he has fainted." When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) recovered from his faint, Abu Talib asked him (peace and blessings be upon him) about it, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Someone came to me wearing white clothes and said to me: 'Cover your private parts.'" Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: This was the first sign of prophethood that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saw - that he (peace and blessings be upon him) was told: 'Cover your private parts.' And from that day on, his (peace and blessings be upon him) private parts were never seen (by anyone).
This hadith is sahih al-isnad (its chain is authentic), but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it. Its supporting witness is the narration of Sayyiduna Abu al-Tufayl (may Allah be pleased with him).

Hadith Grading
Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: (2) In the manuscripts this name has been distorted into "'Amr".

Grading: (3) Its chain is very da'if (weak).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Nadr bin Abd al-Rahman (Abu 'Umar al-Khazzaz) is a matruk (abandoned) narrator, and it is on account of him that al-Dhahabi declared it defective in "al-Talkhis". Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar said in "Fath al-Bari" (5/ 358): "Al-Nadr is weak; he muddled its chain and its text, for he placed the story in the work on Zamzam at the order of Abu Talib, when he (peace and blessings be upon him) was a boy."
Important point: We say: what is preserved (mahfuz) in this story is that it took place with his (peace and blessings be upon him) uncle al-'Abbas, not with Abu Talib, as will come.
Reference / Source: Ibn Sa'd recorded it in "al-Tabaqat" (1/ 131), Ibn Abi 'Asim in "al-Awa'il" (139), al-Bazzar (1167 - Kashf al-Astar), al-Tabarani in "al-Kabir" (11651) and Ibn 'Adi in "al-Kamil" (7/ 22), via various routes from Abu Yahya al-Himmani, with this chain; except for Ibn Abi 'Asim, all their narrations are abridged.
Reference / Source: And Abu Nu'aym narrated it in "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah" (135) via Abd al-Rahman bin Muhammad al-Muharibi, from al-Nadr bin Abd al-Rahman.
Reference / Source: Ibn Abi 'Asim recorded in "al-Ahad wa al-Mathani" (354), al-Bazzar in his "Musnad" (1295) and al-Bayhaqi in "al-Dala'il" (2/ 32-33) via 'Amr bin Abi Qays; Abu Nu'aym in "al-Dala'il" (134) and "al-Ma'rifah" (5328) via Qays bin al-Rabi'; and al-Tabari in "Tahdhib al-Athar" (as in "al-Fath" 5/ 358) via Harun bin al-Mughirah; all three of them from Simak bin Harb, from 'Ikrimah, from Ibn 'Abbas, from his father al-'Abbas bin Abd al-Muttalib, who said: "When Quraysh built the Ka'bah, the men split into pairs to carry the stones. My nephew (the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him) and I would take off our waist-wrappers and put them on our shoulders, and place the stones on them, and when we came near the people we would put our waist-wrappers back on. While he was walking in front of me, he suddenly fell down. I ran, and (saw that) his gaze was fixed on the sky. I asked: My nephew, what is the matter with you? He said: I have been forbidden to walk naked. (Al-'Abbas) said: I kept this hidden until Allah made his prophethood manifest."
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar said: al-Hakam bin Aban corroborated him in narrating from 'Ikrimah; Abu Nu'aym recorded it.
Note / Clarification: We say: this is a good corroboration, but we did not find this narration in his printed selection titled "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah".
Reference / Source: Al-Tayalisi (2781) - and from him Ibn Hajar in "al-Matalib al-'Aliyah" (4213) - narrated from 'Amr bin Thabit bin Hurmuz, from Simak, from 'Ikrimah, from Ibn 'Abbas; and (from) Talhah bin 'Amr bin 'Uthman, from 'Ata', from Ibn 'Abbas, as marfu': "I was forbidden from being naked", and that was before prophethood came down upon him.
Grading: Both of its chains are very da'if (weak).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: The basis of the story, with the mention of al-'Abbas, is supported (shahid) by the hadith of 'Amr bin Dinar, who said: I heard Jabir bin Abd Allah say: When the Ka'bah was built, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and al-'Abbas went to carry stones. Al-'Abbas said to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): Put your waist-wrapper on your neck (so that the stones do not hurt). At that he (peace and blessings be upon him) fell to the ground and his eyes were raised to the sky; then he said: "Give me my waist-wrapper", and he tied it on.
Reference / Source: Ahmad (22/ 14140), al-Bukhari (1582) and Muslim (340) narrated it.
