It is narrated from Abu Bakr bin Ahmad bin Baluyah and Ibrahim bin Ishaq al-Harbi that Abu Rafi' (may Allah be pleased with him), the freed slave of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), was at first owned by Sayyiduna al-Abbas bin Abd al-Muttalib (may Allah be pleased with him). Then, when Sayyiduna al-Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) accepted Islam, he gave him as a gift to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). His name was Aslam, and according to one view Ibrahim. He had accepted Islam before the Battle of Badr, but he remained living in Makkah with Sayyiduna al-Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him). He died after the martyrdom of Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him), in the year 35 AH.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Rafi' (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) to Yemen and tied a banner for him. When he had set off, he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Abu Rafi'! Go after him, and do not call out to him from behind; let him stop and not turn around until I come to him." So he reached him, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) instructed him with several things and said: "O Ali! If Allah guides even one man through you, that is better for you than everything upon which the sun rises."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Rafi' (may Allah be pleased with him) that he came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) carrying a letter from Quraysh. He said: When I saw the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), a longing for Islam arose in my heart, and I said: O Messenger of Allah! By Allah, I will never go back to them. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I do not break a covenant, nor do I detain envoys. But go back to them now; then, if the same feeling that is in your heart now remains, come back." He said: So I went back, and then I came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and accepted Islam.
