Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 6683

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Rafi' (may Allah be pleased with him) that he came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) carrying a letter from Quraysh. He said: When I saw the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), a longing for Islam arose in my heart, and I said: O Messenger of Allah! By Allah, I will never go back to them. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I do not break a covenant, nor do I detain envoys. But go back to them now; then, if the same feeling that is in your heart now remains, come back." He said: So I went back, and then I came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and accepted Islam.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The correct word in the text has been taken from the other source works (of takhrij), whereas the manuscripts have the word "al-kitab", which appears to be a slip of the scribe's pen.

Grading: Its chain is sahih.
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad 39 / (23857), Abu Dawud (2758), al-Nasa'i (8621) and Ibn Hibban (4877) recorded it through various routes from 'Abd Allah bin Wahb with this same chain.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Only in Imam Ahmad's narration has the name of al-Hasan's father "'Ali" been added between al-Hasan and his grandfather Abu Rafi', whereas no narration of his ('Ali's) is known in the books of hadith.
Note / Clarification: Regarding "la akhisu al-'ahd", al-Sindi says that it means "I do not break a covenant"; in Arabic the word "khasa" is used for treachery and breaking a covenant. "Al-burud" (with dammah on the ba' and the ra') is the plural of barid, meaning "messenger or envoy", i.e.: "I do not detain the envoys who come to me".
