Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 6682

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Rafi' (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) to Yemen and tied a banner for him. When he had set off, he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Abu Rafi'! Go after him, and do not call out to him from behind; let him stop and not turn around until I come to him." So he reached him, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) instructed him with several things and said: "O Ali! If Allah guides even one man through you, that is better for you than everything upon which the sun rises."

Hadith Grading
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Manuscript (S) has the word "fi", whereas the word in the text has been established according to manuscripts (M) and (B).

Grading: Its chain is weak.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Yahya bin 'Abd al-Hamid al-Himmani is a weak narrator, and 'Abd al-Rahman bin 'Abd Allah (the freed slave of 'Ali) was mentioned by Imam al-Mizzi among those who narrate from Abu Rafi', but we could not find his biography (tarjamah). Apparently this is a mistake of al-Himmani, as will become clear below.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: The second part of this hadith is established as "sahih" from the hadith of Sahl bin Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him), in which it is mentioned that this occurred on the day the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent 'Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) to Khaybar.
Reference / Source: Al-Hakim al-Tirmidhi recorded it in "Nawadir al-Usul" (601) and al-Tabarani in "al-Mu'jam al-Kabir" (994) through various routes from Yahya al-Himmani with this same chain.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Yahya al-Himmani was contradicted by Abu Ghassan Malik bin Isma'il, who narrated it with a different chain, found with al-Tabarani (930), and through his route with al-Khatib al-Baghdadi.
Grading: The narrators of this chain are thiqah except Abu Khalid al-Dalani, who is "hasan al-hadith"; but the real defect is that Yazid (the freed slave of Ibn 'Ayyash) narrates only from the Successors, so his narration from Abu Rafi' is "mursal", since Abu Rafi' died much earlier (around 37 AH).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: A supporting report for the second part of this hadith is the marfu' narration of Sahl bin Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) in Sahih al-Bukhari (2942) and Sahih Muslim (2406): "That even one man should be guided through you is better for you than red camels".
