It is narrated from Abu Bakr bin Ahmad bin Baluyah and Ibrahim bin Ishaq al-Harbi that Abu Rafi' (may Allah be pleased with him), the freed slave of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), was at first owned by Sayyiduna al-Abbas bin Abd al-Muttalib (may Allah be pleased with him). Then, when Sayyiduna al-Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) accepted Islam, he gave him as a gift to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). His name was Aslam, and according to one view Ibrahim. He had accepted Islam before the Battle of Badr, but he remained living in Makkah with Sayyiduna al-Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him). He died after the martyrdom of Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him), in the year 35 AH.

Explanation & Benefits

Important point: This is how it is narrated here in the manuscripts, but the well-known route (al-jaddah) is that Ibrahim al-Harbi narrates it from Mus'ab bin 'Abd Allah al-Zubayri, and this chain (silsilah) is repeated often with the author (al-Hakim).
