Praising a believer to his face increases faith

أخبرني أبو جعفر محمد بن عبد الله البغدادي، حدثنا محمد بن عمرو ابن خالد الحرَّاني، حدثني أبي، حدثنا ابن لَهِيعة، عن صالح بن أبي عَريب، عن خلَّاد بن السائب قال: دخلتُ على أسامةَ بن زيد فمَدَحني في وجهي، فقال: إنه حَمَلني أن أمدحَك في وجهك، أنِّي سمعتُ النبيَّ ﷺ يقول: "إذا مُدِحَ المُؤمِنُ في وجهِه، رَبَا الإيمانُ في قلبه" (1). ذكرُ أبي رافع مولى رسول الله ﵁-
It is narrated from Khallad bin al-Sa'ib that he said: I came to Sayyiduna Usamah bin Zayd (may Allah be pleased with them both), and he praised me to my face and said: What prompted me to praise you to your face is that I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "When a believer is praised to his face, faith grows in his heart."

(1) إسناده ضعيف؛ عبد الله بن لَهِيعة سيئ الحفظ، وشيخه صالح بن أبي عريب روى عنه جمع وذكره ابن حبان في "الثقات"، فلا يقبل تفردهما بمثل هذا الحديث. وضعَّفه العراقي في "تخريج الإحياء".
Grading: Its chain is weak.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): 'Abd Allah bin Lahi'ah had a poor memory, and although his shaykh Salih bin Abi 'Arib is considered reliable (Ibn Hibban mentioned him in al-Thiqat), the two of them being alone (in narrating) a hadith of this kind is not acceptable.
Reference / Source: Imam al-'Iraqi declared it weak in "Takhrij al-Ihya'".
وأخرجه الطبراني في "المعجم الكبير" (424) عن محمد بن عمرو بن خالد الحراني، بهذا الإسناد.
Reference / Source: Imam al-Tabarani recorded it in "al-Mu'jam al-Kabir" (424) through the chain of Muhammad bin 'Amr bin Khalid al-Harrani, by this same route.
