It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Umamah bin Sahl bin Hunayf (may Allah be pleased with him) that Amir bin Rabi'ah (may Allah be pleased with him) saw Sayyiduna Sahl bin Hunayf (may Allah be pleased with him) bathing with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) at the place called "al-Kharrar". He (seeing his beauty) said: "By Allah! I have never seen anything like today (such a beautiful sight), nor the skin of a secluded maiden like it." So Sahl fell down unconscious right there. It was said: O Messenger of Allah! Will you look into the condition of Sahl bin Hunayf? Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) called Amir bin Rabi'ah and, angry with him, said: "Why would one of you kill his brother or his companion? Why did you not supplicate for blessing (upon him when you saw him)?! Bathe for him." So Amir bathed for him, and Sahl got up in a state in which nothing was wrong with him. And the method of this bath (for treating the evil eye) is as follows: a bowl of water is brought, then the one bathing puts both his hands into that bowl together, then pours water from the bowl over his face, then washes his right hand in it, and rinses his mouth into the bowl, then puts his hand in and washes his back, then does the same with his left hand, then washes his chest into the bowl, then washes his right knee and the tips of his fingers into the bowl, and does the same with the left foot, and washes the inner part of his waist-wrap (that touches the body). Then he covers the bowl before placing it on the ground. Then (the one afflicted by the evil eye) drinks a little water from it, rinses his mouth, and pours it over his face, then pours it over his head, then throws the bowl behind him.
The two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) agreed on recording this hadith in abridged form.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Umamah bin Sahl bin Hunayf (may Allah be pleased with him) that Amir bin Rabi'ah (may Allah be pleased with him) passed by Sahl bin Hunayf al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) while he was bathing at al-Kharrar, and he said: "By Allah! I have never seen anything like today (such a beautiful body), nor the skin of a secluded maiden like it." So Sahl fell down right there. Then people came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah! Will you look into the condition of Sahl bin Hunayf? The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Do you suspect anyone concerning him?" They said: Yes, Amir bin Rabi'ah passed by him. So he (peace and blessings be upon him) became angry with him and said: "Why did you not supplicate for blessing?! Bathe for him." So Amir bathed for him, and Sahl set off with the caravan (as if nothing had happened to him).
Imam al-Hakim says: As for al-Jarrah bin al-Minhal, he is Abu al-Atuf al-Jazari, and he does not meet the condition of the Sahih. I have recorded this hadith only in order to explain the method of the bath, and for this method to be narrated from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) with a connected chain is very ghareeb (rare).

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Umamah bin Sahl bin Hunayf (may Allah be pleased with him) that my father, Sahl bin Hunayf (may Allah be pleased with him), on the day of Khaybar, when Allah Almighty had defeated the enemy, took off his cloak and began to bathe, while Amir bin Rabi'ah was watching him. Sahl was a fair-skinned, very handsome man. Amir bin Rabi'ah looked at him and said in amazement: "I have never seen a sight as beautiful as today; not even the body of a secluded maiden could be as beautiful as the body of Sahl bin Hunayf." At that very moment Sayyiduna Sahl (may Allah be pleased with him) fell ill right there, and his illness became severe. So people came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said that Sahl had fallen ill and was no longer able to travel with him. He (peace and blessings be upon him) came to him, and he was informed of the words Amir bin Rabi'ah had said. At this the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Why would one of you kill his brother? Why did you not supplicate for blessing (that is, why did you not say Masha'Allah)? Indeed, the evil eye is real. Perform ablution (wudu) for him." Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When one of you sees something that pleases him, let him supplicate for blessing, for the evil eye is real."
These additions in both of these hadiths are among what the two Shaykhs did not record.
