Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: In manuscripts (Z) and (M) it is written "dakhil", which is a corruption. "Dakhilat al-izar" means the inner edge of the lower garment that lies against the body.
Note / Clarification: That is: the one who cast the evil eye pours the water over the head of the one afflicted by his eye.
Grading: Its chain is very weak (da'if jiddan).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Jarrah bin al-Minhal is "matruk al-hadith" (abandoned in hadith), and some even accused him (of lying). However, other hafiz scholars narrated this report from al-Zuhri, though they differed over whether it is "mawsul" or "mursal". Some narrated it as "mawsul" by mentioning Sahl bin Hunayf (that he told his son Abu Umamah), but most narrators narrated it as "mursal" (as will come in the takhrij of the following mursal chain). In any case, Abu Umamah was born in the lifetime of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), so his mursal narrations are like the mursal narrations of the senior Tabi'in. And it is not unlikely that the one who told him this report was his father (the subject of the story). The report is sahih. And Allah knows best.
Important point: The method of bathing mentioned in this report as a cure for the evil eye is the statement (fatwa) of Imam al-Zuhri, as several of his hafiz students have clarified.
Reference / Source: Ibn Hibban (6106) narrated it via Abd al-Samad bin Sa'id bin Ya'qub al-Himsi from Sulayman bin Abd al-Hamid al-Bahrani, from Yahya bin Salih al-Wuhazi, from Ishaq bin Yahya al-Kalbi, from Muhammad bin Muslim bin Shihab al-Zuhri.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In this narration the shaykh of Yahya bin Salih is named "Ishaq bin Yahya al-Kalbi" instead of "al-Jarrah bin al-Minhal"! But the chain reaching Yahya bin Salih with the author (al-Hakim) is stronger than Ibn Hibban's chain.
Reference / Source: Ibn Majah (3509) narrated it from Hisham bin Ammar, and al-Nasa'i (9965) from Muhammad bin Abdullah bin Yazid and al-Harith bin Miskin. All three narrate it from Sufyan bin Uyaynah, from al-Zuhri, from Abu Umamah bin Sahl, who said: Amir bin Rabi'ah passed by Sahl bin Hunayf, and he mentioned it likewise as "mursal". Likewise Yunus bin Yazid narrated it from al-Zuhri as "mursal" (as will come), as did a group whom al-Daraqutni mentioned in "al-'Ilal" (2693).
Reference / Source: However, Ahmad (25/ 15980) narrated it via Abu Uways al-Asbahi, and al-Nasa'i (9966) via Sufyan bin Uyaynah from Ma'mar bin Rashid. Both of them (Abu Uways and Ma'mar) narrate from al-Zuhri, from Abu Umamah bin Sahl bin Hunayf, from his father, that Amir, and they mentioned it as "mawsul" (through Sahl bin Hunayf).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Abd al-Razzaq al-San'ani contradicted Sufyan bin Uyaynah in his narration from Ma'mar bin Rashid. Thus in "Jami' Ma'mar bin Rashid" (which is Abd al-Razzaq's narration, 19766) Abd al-Razzaq narrated it from Ma'mar as "mursal", without mention of Sahl bin Hunayf.
Reference / Source: Shababah bin Sawwar narrated it from Ibn Abi Dhi'b (in Ibn Abi Shaybah 8/ 58 and elsewhere), from al-Zuhri, from Abu Umamah bin Sahl, from his father. So he too narrated it as "mawsul".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): But Hajjaj bin Muhammad contradicted Shababah (as will come) and narrated it as "mursal".
Reference / Source: Likewise Ja'far bin Burqan narrated it as "mawsul" in al-Nasa'i (9967), from al-Zuhri, from Abu Umamah bin Sahl bin Hunayf, from Amir bin Rabi'ah (that he saw Sahl bin Hunayf). But here he mentioned "Amir bin Rabi'ah" as the link instead of Sahl.
Grading: Al-Nasa'i declared this narration weak and said: "Ja'far bin Burqan is weak in narrating from al-Zuhri, while there is no harm in him when narrating from others."
Reference / Source: Ibrahim bin Isma'il bin Mujammi' also narrated it as "mawsul" (through Sahl bin Hunayf), in Ibn Abi Asim's "al-Ahad wa al-Mathani" (1910) and al-Tabarani's "al-Mu'jam al-Kabir" (5573).
Grading: But Ibrahim bin Isma'il bin Mujammi' is "da'if al-hadith" (weak in hadith), and the chain reaching him is also weak.
Reference / Source: Among those who narrated it as "mursal" from al-Zuhri, from Abu Umamah bin Sahl bin Hunayf, is a group: Malik (in "al-Muwatta'" 2/ 939); Shu'ayb bin Abi Hamzah (in al-Tabarani's "Musnad al-Shamiyyin" 3002); and others whose narrations will come under the next chain. Likewise Hajjaj bin Muhammad al-Missisi narrated it via Ibn Abi Dhi'b from al-Zuhri in Abu Ubayd al-Qasim bin Sallam's "Gharib al-Hadith" (2/ 112).
Note / Clarification: Likewise Muhammad bin Abi Umamah narrated it from his father as "mursal", which will come with the author (al-Hakim) under number (5849).
Reference / Source: Ibn Abi Asim narrated it in "al-Ahad wa al-Mathani" (1909) and al-Tabarani in "al-Mu'jam al-Kabir" (5582) via Abu Ma'shar, from Abdullah bin Abi Habibah, from Abu Umamah bin Sahl, from his father; so he too narrated it as "mawsul".
Grading: But Abu Ma'shar (Najih bin Abd al-Rahman al-Sindi) is da'if (weak).
Important point: A group of al-Zuhri's hafiz students clarified that the method of bathing mentioned at the end of the hadith is al-Zuhri's own statement, which he relates from the scholars of his time. Among these students are: Yunus bin Yazid al-Ayli (in Abu Awanah 9598 and al-Tabarani 5577); Uqayl bin Khalid al-Ayli (in al-Tahawi's "Sharh Mushkil al-Athar" 2898); and Shu'ayb bin Abi Hamzah (in his narration cited earlier).
Reference / Source: Among them is also Ibn Abi Dhi'b (in Abu Ubayd's "Gharib al-Hadith" 2/ 112 and Ibn Abi Shaybah's "al-Musannaf" 8/ 58). This story will come from the "mursal" hadith of Abdullah bin Amir bin Rabi'ah (without the method of bathing for the evil eye) under number (7690); and in the "mawsul" hadith of Abdullah bin Amir bin Rabi'ah from his father only the marfu' part will come, briefly (without the story).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Both of these routes revolve around "Umayyah bin Hind bin Sa'd bin Sahl bin Hunayf", who is majhul al-hal (of unknown condition).
Note / Clarification: "Al-Kharrar": a water (spring/pool) belonging to Banu Zuhayr and Banu Badr (the two sons of Damrah). Al-Zubayr bin Bakkar says: it is a valley of the Hijaz that flows into al-Juhfah. Al-Sakuni says: the place of Ghadir Khumm is called al-Kharrar. Isa bin Dinar says: it is a spring at Khaybar. See al-Bakri's "Mu'jam ma Ista'jam" (2/ 492).
Note / Clarification: "Al-Mukhabba'ah": the maiden who is kept in her private quarters and has not yet married.
Note / Clarification: "Lubita": that is, he was thrown down and fell to the ground.
Important point: (Al-Bukhari and Muslim) did not narrate this hadith of Abu Umamah bin Sahl; rather they narrated the marfu' hadith of Abu Hurayrah: "The evil eye is real." (al-Bukhari: 5740, Muslim: 2187).
