Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 5848

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Umamah bin Sahl bin Hunayf (may Allah be pleased with him) that Amir bin Rabi'ah (may Allah be pleased with him) passed by Sahl bin Hunayf al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) while he was bathing at al-Kharrar, and he said: "By Allah! I have never seen anything like today (such a beautiful body), nor the skin of a secluded maiden like it." So Sahl fell down right there. Then people came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah! Will you look into the condition of Sahl bin Hunayf? The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Do you suspect anyone concerning him?" They said: Yes, Amir bin Rabi'ah passed by him. So he (peace and blessings be upon him) became angry with him and said: "Why did you not supplicate for blessing?! Bathe for him." So Amir bathed for him, and Sahl set off with the caravan (as if nothing had happened to him).
Imam al-Hakim says: As for al-Jarrah bin al-Minhal, he is Abu al-Atuf al-Jazari, and he does not meet the condition of the Sahih. I have recorded this hadith only in order to explain the method of the bath, and for this method to be narrated from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) with a connected chain is very ghareeb (rare).

Grading: The hadith is sahih, and the men of this chain are thiqah, but it is "mursal" like the previous chain. For Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) was born in the lifetime of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him); it was he (peace and blessings be upon him) who named him, supplicated for him and invoked blessing upon him (tahnik and so on). Hence he is counted among the senior Tabi'in, as Ibn Abd al-Barr said in his biography in "al-Isti'ab".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Yunus is Ibn Yazid al-Ayli.
Reference / Source: It is in Abdullah bin Wahb's "al-Jami'" (642 - ed. Abu al-Khayr), and from there al-Tabarani narrated it in "al-Mu'jam al-Kabir" (5577) and al-Bayhaqi in "al-Sunan al-Kubra" (9/ 352).

Reference / Source: Malik narrated it in "al-Muwatta'" (2/ 939), and via him Ibn Wahb in "al-Jami'" (642), al-Nasa'i (7572), al-Tahawi in "Sharh Mushkil al-Athar" (2895), al-Tabarani in "al-Mu'jam al-Kabir" (5575), al-Bayhaqi in "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah" (6/ 163) and Abu Muhammad al-Baghawi in "Sharh al-Sunnah" (3245); and Ibn Majah (3509), al-Nasa'i (9965), al-Tahawi (2894), al-Khara'iti in "Makarim al-Akhlaq" (1106), Abu Nu'aym in "Ma'rifat al-Sahabah" (936), and al-Bayhaqi in "al-Sunan al-Kubra" (9/ 351) and "al-Adab" (708) narrated it via Sufyan bin Uyaynah; al-Tahawi (2898) via Uqayl al-Ayli; al-Tabarani in "al-Mu'jam al-Kabir" (5576) via Mu'awiyah bin Yahya al-Sadafi and in "Musnad al-Shamiyyin" (3002) via Shu'ayb bin Abi Hamzah; Abu Ubayd in "Gharib al-Hadith" (2/ 112) via Ibn Abi Dhi'b; and Ma'mar bin Rashid in his "al-Jami'" (19766), and via him al-Tabarani in "al-Mu'jam al-Kabir" (5574) and al-Bayhaqi in "Shu'ab al-Iman" (10710). All of them (Malik, Ibn Uyaynah, Uqayl, Shu'ayb, Ma'mar, Ibn Abi Dhi'b and Mu'awiyah al-Sadafi) narrate it from al-Zuhri, from Abu Umamah bin Sahl, as "mursal".
Important point: Some narrators also narrated it as "mawsul" (i.e., mentioning Sahl bin Hunayf as the link), as passed in the previous chain, but those who narrated it as "mursal" are more eminent and greater hafiz scholars than the others. And Allah knows best. In any case, a mursal report like this is also a "hujjah" (proof).

Technical note / Defect ('illah): We have mentioned under the previous chain that the explanation of the method of bathing is the statement of al-Zuhri, which al-Jarrah bin al-Minhal inserted ("idraj") into the hadith; and al-Jarrah is a very weak and "matruk" (abandoned) narrator.
