Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 5849

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Umamah bin Sahl bin Hunayf (may Allah be pleased with him) that my father, Sahl bin Hunayf (may Allah be pleased with him), on the day of Khaybar, when Allah Almighty had defeated the enemy, took off his cloak and began to bathe, while Amir bin Rabi'ah was watching him. Sahl was a fair-skinned, very handsome man. Amir bin Rabi'ah looked at him and said in amazement: "I have never seen a sight as beautiful as today; not even the body of a secluded maiden could be as beautiful as the body of Sahl bin Hunayf." At that very moment Sayyiduna Sahl (may Allah be pleased with him) fell ill right there, and his illness became severe. So people came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said that Sahl had fallen ill and was no longer able to travel with him. He (peace and blessings be upon him) came to him, and he was informed of the words Amir bin Rabi'ah had said. At this the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Why would one of you kill his brother? Why did you not supplicate for blessing (that is, why did you not say Masha'Allah)? Indeed, the evil eye is real. Perform ablution (wudu) for him." Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When one of you sees something that pleases him, let him supplicate for blessing, for the evil eye is real."
These additions in both of these hadiths are among what the two Shaykhs did not record.

Grading: The hadith is sahih, while the present chain is da'if due to the weakness of Yusuf bin Tahman. Al-Dhahabi pointed to this defect in "al-Talkhis" for the same reason. But Yusuf is not alone in it; rather Malik bin Anas corroborated him. In any case, this report too is "mursal" like the previous one.
