It is narrated from Urwah that Sayyiduna Hudhayfah bin al-Yaman (may Allah be pleased with him) was from Banu Abs and was an ally among the Ansar. His father was killed on the day of Uhud (while fighting) alongside the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him); on that day the Muslims made a mistake, because they took him to be one of the polytheists. Sayyiduna Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) began calling out: My father! My father! But they did not understand (in the tumult) until they had killed him. So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) gave an order concerning him, and his blood money was paid.

Muhammad bin Umar said: Hudhayfah bin Husayl bin Jabir bin Rabi'ah bin Amr bin Jirwah; and Jirwah is "al-Yaman," from whose descendants is Sayyiduna Hudhayfah. He was called "al-Yaman" because he had shed blood among his own people, so he fled to Madinah and became an ally of Banu Abd al-Ashhal. So his people named him "al-Yaman" because he had made an alliance with the Yemenis (the Ansar). Sayyiduna Hudhayfah, his father Husayl and his brother Safwan took part in the Battle of Uhud. As for his father, some of the Muslims killed him on the day of Uhud, taking him to be a polytheist, and Sayyiduna Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) gave his blood money in charity to the Muslims. As for Sayyiduna Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him), he took part in all the battles of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) after Badr, and he lived until the early period of the caliphate of Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), that is, the year 36 AH. Some people hold that he died in al-Mada'in in the year 35 AH, forty days after the martyrdom of Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him).

Muhammad bin Abdullah bin Numayr said: Sayyiduna Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) died in the year 36 AH, and it is also said that he died forty days after Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him).

Muhammad bin Jarir said: This view is wrong, and I think that whoever holds it either does not know the time of the martyrdom of Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him), or else he does not know how to calculate. For there is no disagreement among all the biographers that Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) was martyred in Dhu al-Hijjah of the year 35 AH, and a group of them say that he was martyred on the eighteenth of Dhu al-Hijjah. So if his martyrdom was in Dhu al-Hijjah and Sayyiduna Hudhayfah lived forty days after him, then his death necessarily falls in the following year (36 AH).
