Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 5723

Muhammad bin Umar said: Hudhayfah bin Husayl bin Jabir bin Rabi'ah bin Amr bin Jirwah; and Jirwah is "al-Yaman," from whose descendants is Sayyiduna Hudhayfah. He was called "al-Yaman" because he had shed blood among his own people, so he fled to Madinah and became an ally of Banu Abd al-Ashhal. So his people named him "al-Yaman" because he had made an alliance with the Yemenis (the Ansar). Sayyiduna Hudhayfah, his father Husayl and his brother Safwan took part in the Battle of Uhud. As for his father, some of the Muslims killed him on the day of Uhud, taking him to be a polytheist, and Sayyiduna Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) gave his blood money in charity to the Muslims. As for Sayyiduna Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him), he took part in all the battles of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) after Badr, and he lived until the early period of the caliphate of Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), that is, the year 36 AH. Some people hold that he died in al-Mada'in in the year 35 AH, forty days after the martyrdom of Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him).
