Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 5722

It is narrated from Urwah that Sayyiduna Hudhayfah bin al-Yaman (may Allah be pleased with him) was from Banu Abs and was an ally among the Ansar. His father was killed on the day of Uhud (while fighting) alongside the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him); on that day the Muslims made a mistake, because they took him to be one of the polytheists. Sayyiduna Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) began calling out: My father! My father! But they did not understand (in the tumult) until they had killed him. So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) gave an order concerning him, and his blood money was paid.

Grading: (1) The hadith is sahih; the narrators of this chain are thiqah (trustworthy), but it is mursal. Hisham bin 'Urwah narrated it as connected (mawsul), from his father, from 'A'ishah.
Note / Clarification: Abu al-Muwajjih refers to "Muhammad bin 'Amr bin al-Muwajjih al-Fazari", 'Abdan refers to "'Abd Allah bin 'Uthman bin Jabalah", 'Abd Allah refers to "Ibn al-Mubarak", and Yunus refers to "Ibn Yazid al-Ayli".
Reference / Source: Ibn Sa'd narrated it in "al-Tabaqat" 4/ 250 from Muhammad bin 'Umar al-Waqidi, he from Yunus bin Yazid. Also Musa bin 'Uqbah narrated it in his "Maghazi" (as in Ibn Hajar's "al-Dirayah" 2/ 267), and via his route al-Bayhaqi in "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah" 3/ 218 and in "al-Sunan" 8/ 132; al-Shafi'i in "al-Umm" 7/ 93 and 105 - 106 (and via his route al-Bayhaqi in "Ma'rifat al-Sunan wa al-Athar" (16440)) via the route of Ma'mar bin Rashid; and al-Harith bin Abi Usamah in his "Musnad" (as in al-Haythami's "Bughyat al-Bahith" (522)) via the route of Zayd bin Abi Unaysah. All three (Musa bin 'Uqbah, Ma'mar and Ibn Abi Unaysah) narrate it from Ibn Shihab al-Zuhri, he from 'Urwah.
Reference / Source: Abu Ishaq al-Fazari narrated it in "al-Siyar" (as in Ibn Hajar's "Fath al-Bari" 22/ 58), and via his route al-Harith in his "Musnad" (as in "Bughyat al-Bahith" (521)), from al-Awza'i, he from al-Zuhri, who said: The Muslims made a mistake ...
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Thus he did not carry it beyond al-Zuhri!
Reference / Source: Al-Bukhari (3290) narrated it via the route of Hisham bin 'Urwah, he from his father, he from 'A'ishah.
Details of the narration: He mentioned something similar, except that in it: Hudhayfah said: "May Allah forgive you", and he did not mention the blood-money (diyah).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Ibn Hajar said: Those who hold that his blood-money was due from those who were present have used Hudhayfah's words as evidence, because the meaning of his saying "May Allah forgive you" is "I have pardoned you", and one only pardons something one has a right to claim.
