It is narrated from Mus'ab al-Zubayri that the mother of Muhammad bin Talhah bin Ubaydullah was Hamnah bint Jahsh (may Allah be pleased with her).

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Muhammad bin Hatib (may Allah be pleased with him) that when we had finished with the fighting of the Battle of the Camel, Sayyiduna Ali, Sayyiduna al-Hasan bin Ali, Sayyiduna Ammar bin Yasir, Sayyiduna Sa'sa'ah bin Suhan, Sayyiduna al-Ashtar and Sayyiduna Muhammad bin Abi Bakr (may Allah be pleased with them) began going around among the slain. Suddenly Sayyiduna al-Hasan bin Ali (may Allah be pleased with them both) caught sight of a slain man who had fallen on his face. He turned him over onto his back and said: "Indeed, we belong to Allah, and indeed to Him we will return" [Surah al-Baqarah: 156]. By Allah! This is the young prince of Quraysh, the light of their eyes. His father (Sayyiduna Ali, may Allah be pleased with him) asked: O my dear son, who is he? He replied: This is Muhammad bin Talhah. So Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) (also) said: "Indeed, we belong to Allah, and indeed to Him we will return" [Surah al-Baqarah: 156]. By Allah! As far as I know, he was an extremely righteous and virtuous young man. Then he sat down right there in a state of grief and sorrow.

Muhammad bin al-Dahhak bin Uthman al-Hizami narrates from his father that the inclination of Muhammad bin Talhah was with Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him), and Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) had forbidden his killing. He had said: "Whoever sees the one with the black hooded cloak (burnus), let him not kill him," meaning Muhammad bin Talhah. On that day Muhammad bin Talhah asked Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her): O mother, what do you command me? She said: I think you should be like the better of the two sons of Adam (Abel), that is, withhold your hand. So he withheld his hand. Then a man from Banu Asad bin Khuzaymah called Talhah bin Mudlij killed him. It is also said that Shaddad bin Mu'awiyah al-Absi killed him, and there is also a view that Isam bin Muqsha'irr al-Nasri killed him, and most of the reports are upon this view. He is the one who said these verses about killing him:
"And many a dishevelled man, much standing in prayer with the verses of his Lord,
of little harm, a Muslim in the eyes of the people:
I closed in on him with the spear from beneath his garments,
and he fell prostrate upon his hands and his mouth.
I drove the spearhead through his shirt into him,
and threw him down from the back of a branded, swift steed.
In the charge of the horses I set his body straight before me,
as though he were a hardy old vulture of stout build.
He was reminding me of 'Ha Mim' when I pierced him,
so why did he not recite 'Ha Mim' before advancing?
I struck him for nothing else except that he was not a follower
of Ali, and whoever does not follow the truth does wrong."
The narrator said: When Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) saw him slain, he said: "His devotion to his father has brought him down to this place where he fell."

It is narrated from Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) that Sayyiduna Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I was the first to return to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) (on the day of Uhud), and with him was Sayyiduna Talhah bin Ubaydullah (may Allah be pleased with him). Sayyiduna Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him) had been overcome at that time, while the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was in a better state than him. So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to us: "Attend to your companion (Talhah)." So we left him (peace and blessings be upon him) and turned to him, and we saw that the rings of his helmet had sunk into his cheeks. Between him and the east there was a man, and I was closer to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) than he was; and it turned out to be Sayyiduna Abu Ubaydah bin al-Jarrah (may Allah be pleased with him). I went forward to pull out the rings of the helmet, but Sayyiduna Abu Ubaydah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Abu Bakr! I adjure you by Allah to let me do this. So I left him, and he pulled it out (with his teeth), and one of his front teeth came out. Then I went forward to pull out the other ring, and Sayyiduna Abu Ubaydah (may Allah be pleased with him) said the same again. He pulled out the other ring as well, and his other front tooth also came out. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Indeed, your companion (Talhah) has made (Paradise) obligatory for himself," or "Talhah has made it obligatory (awjaba)."

It is narrated from Isa bin Talhah bin Ubaydullah: I went in to the Mother of the Believers, Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her), and Aishah bint Talhah. At that time Aishah bint Talhah was saying to her mother, Sayyidah Asma (may Allah be pleased with her): I am better than you, and my father is better than your father. The narrator said: Her mother began scolding her and saying: You are better than me?! Then the Mother of the Believers, Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her), said: Shall I not judge between you two? She said: Of course. So Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: Sayyiduna Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Abu Bakr! You are one freed by Allah from the Fire ('atiqullah min al-nar)." Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: From that day he came to be named "Atiq," whereas before that he had not been named Atiq. Then Sayyidah Aishah said: Then Sayyiduna Talhah bin Ubaydullah (may Allah be pleased with him) came in, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Talhah! You are among those who have fulfilled their vow (mimman qada nahbah)."
