Muhammad bin Abdullah bin Numayr states that the kunyah of al-Miqdad bin al-Aswad (may Allah be pleased with him) was Abu Ma'bad. He passed away in the year thirty (30) AH, having reached about seventy years of age. He used to dye his beard yellow. He died at al-Juruf, from where he was carried on the shoulders of men (to Madinah); Sayyiduna Uthman bin Affan (may Allah be pleased with him) led his funeral prayer, and he was buried in Jannat al-Baqi'.

Muhammad bin Umar states: Al-Miqdad bin Amr bin Tha'labah bin Malik bin Rabi'ah (this is his lineage), and the narrator traced his lineage up to Quda'ah. His kunyah was Abu Ma'bad. In the Days of Ignorance he had made an alliance (a pact) with al-Aswad bin Abd Yaghuth al-Zuhri, who took him as his adopted son, because of which he was called al-Miqdad bin al-Aswad. Then when this verse of the Qur'an was revealed: "Call them (the adopted sons) by (the names of) their (real) fathers" [Surah al-Ahzab: 5], he began to be called al-Miqdad bin Amr. According to the narration of Ibn Ishaq, al-Miqdad (may Allah be pleased with him) took part in the second emigration to Abyssinia. He took part in the Battles of Badr, Uhud, al-Khandaq and all the campaigns with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he was counted among the renowned archers from the Companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him).

Ibn Umar (Muhammad bin Umar) states that Musa bin Ya'qub narrates from his paternal aunt, and she from her mother Karimah bint al-Miqdad, that she described the features of her father (al-Miqdad, may Allah be pleased with him) before the people and said: "He was tall, of a light brown complexion, with a large belly. The hair of his head was thick, and he used to dye his beard yellow; his beard was handsome, neither very thick nor very thin. His eyes were large, his eyebrows were joined together, and his nose was prominent." Karimah bint al-Miqdad further said: "Al-Miqdad (may Allah be pleased with him) passed away at al-Juruf, three miles from Madinah; he was carried on the shoulders of men and buried in Madinah. Uthman bin Affan (may Allah be pleased with him) led his funeral prayer. This happened in the year thirty-three (33) AH, and on the day he died he was around seventy years of age."
