Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 5572

Muhammad bin Abdullah bin Numayr states that the kunyah of al-Miqdad bin al-Aswad (may Allah be pleased with him) was Abu Ma'bad. He passed away in the year thirty (30) AH, having reached about seventy years of age. He used to dye his beard yellow. He died at al-Juruf, from where he was carried on the shoulders of men (to Madinah); Sayyiduna Uthman bin Affan (may Allah be pleased with him) led his funeral prayer, and he was buried in Jannat al-Baqi'.

Explanation & Benefits

Note / Clarification: (1) Thus in our manuscripts of "al-Mustadrak" the death of al-Miqdad is given, from Ibn Numayr, as the year 30 AH, while in Ibn Zabr al-Raba'i's "Tarikh al-'Ulama' wa Wafayatihim" (1/ 122) it is stated that al-Miqdad died in the year 33 AH. Al-Raba'i narrates the reports of Ibn Numayr through two routes, as he explained at the opening of his book: the route of Muhammad bin Abd Allah bin Sulayman al-Hadrami and the route of Muhammad bin Isma'il al-Tirmidhi, both from Ibn Numayr. So perhaps the word "thalath" (three) was dropped by some copyists long ago.
Note / Clarification: "Al-Jurf": a place that lay to the north of Madinah; it is now one of its districts, joined to it, with farms and inhabitants.
