Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 5571

It is narrated from Sufyan bin Suhbanah al-Mahri that he said: I was a companion of al-Miqdad bin al-Aswad (may Allah be pleased with him) in the Days of Ignorance. He had killed someone among his people, because of which he fled to the tribe of Kindah and became their ally. Then there too blood was shed by him (someone was killed), so he fled to Makkah and became an ally of al-Aswad bin Abd Yaghuth; for this reason he is attributed to him (al-Aswad).

Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): (3) The text between the square brackets [ ] had dropped from the manuscripts, but it must be mentioned, because afterwards the narrator says: "I was a companion of al-Miqdad". We restored it from al-Tabarani's "al-Mu'jam al-Kabir" (20/ 558), where this report is narrated from Abu al-Zinba'.

Grading: (4) Its chain is "da'if" (weak) because of Ibn Lahi'ah (Abd Allah).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Sufyan bin Suhbanah (also called Suhabah) is not known to be mentioned except through his (Ibn Lahi'ah's) route.
Important point: Ibn Shumasah: he is Abd al-Rahman.
Reference / Source: It was recorded by al-Tabarani in "al-Kabir" (20/ 558), and through him Ibn 'Asakir in "Tarikh Dimashq" (60/ 155), from Abu al-Zinba' Rawh bin al-Faraj, with this chain.
Note / Clarification: Muhammad bin Habib al-Baghdadi transmitted in "al-Munammaq fi Akhbar Quraysh" (p. 363) from Hisham bin al-Kalbi that 'Amr bin Tha'labah al-Bahrani, the father of al-Miqdad, the Companion of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), shed blood among his people, so he went to Hadramawt and married a woman of al-Sadif, from a clan called Banu Shakal, and she bore him al-Miqdad. Then words passed between al-Miqdad's maternal half-brothers and Abu Shamir Hujr bin Murrah - one of the chieftains (qayl) of Hadramawt, known as al-Adhmari - so al-Miqdad attacked Abu Shamir and struck him on his leg with the sword, and he became lame. Al-Miqdad fled to Makkah, and Abu Shamir and his companions took spoils from al-Miqdad's companions. Al-Miqdad entered Makkah and saw a man circling the House wearing two swords; he asked about him and was told: This is al-Aswad bin Abd Yaghuth bin Abd Manaf bin Zuhrah. So al-Miqdad came to him, told him (his story) and asked him to make an alliance with him and grant him protection, and al-Aswad did so.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): This statement of Ibn al-Kalbi contradicts the narration of Ibn Lahi'ah, who made al-Miqdad himself, not his father, the one who shed blood among his people; and Allah the Exalted knows best.
