It is narrated from Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) that when the initial rulings about the prohibition of wine were revealed, he said: O Allah, make a clear and satisfying statement to us concerning wine. So this verse of Surah al-Baqarah was revealed: "They ask you about wine and gambling" [Surah al-Baqarah: 219]. Then Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) was called and the verse was recited to him, and he made the same supplication again: O Allah, make a clearer statement to us concerning wine. Then the verse of Surah al-Ma'idah was revealed, and he was called and it was recited to him. When the reciter reached the words, "So will you not desist?" [Surah al-Ma'idah: 91], Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "We have desisted."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that when this verse was revealed: "And do not approach the property of the orphan except in the way that is best" [Surah al-An'am: 152], the people separated their food and property completely from the property of the orphans. The result was that the orphans' food began to spoil and the meat began to rot. They complained about this to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, sent down this verse: "Say: Setting their affairs right is best; and if you mix your affairs with theirs, then they are your brothers" [Surah al-Baqarah: 220]. The narrator said: Then the people began to live together with the orphans and to share their property with them.
