It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) taught me that whenever any hardship or distress befalls me, I should say: 'La ilaha illallahul-Halimul-Karim, subhan Allah, wa tabarakallahu Rabbul-'Arshil-'Azim, wal-hamdu lillahi Rabbil-'alamin' (There is no god but Allah, the Most Forbearing, the Most Generous; glorified is Allah, and most blessed is Allah, the Lord of the Mighty Throne; and all praise is for Allah, the Lord of all the worlds).
This hadith is sahih on the condition of Imam Muslim, but the two Shaykhs did not record it because of a disagreement about its transmitters; and likewise Muhammad bin Ajlan narrated its chain from Muhammad bin Ka'b.
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) instructed me in these words, that if any hardship or distress befalls me, I should say them: 'La ilaha illallahul-Halimul-Karim, subhan Allah, tabarakallahu Rabbul-'Arshil-'Azim, wal-hamdu lillahi Rabbil-'alamin' (There is no god but Allah, the Most Forbearing, the Most Generous; glorified is Allah; blessed is Allah, the Lord of the Mighty Throne; and all praise is for Allah, the Lord of all the worlds). The narrator states that Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Ja'far (may Allah be pleased with him) used to prompt the dying person with these words and used to blow over one suffering from fever while reciting them.
Imam Bukhari and Muslim recorded this hadith in abridged form from the narration of Qatadah, which he took from Abu al-Aliyah, and he from Ibn Abbas.
