It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) instructed me in these words, that if any hardship or distress befalls me, I should say them: 'La ilaha illallahul-Halimul-Karim, subhan Allah, tabarakallahu Rabbul-'Arshil-'Azim, wal-hamdu lillahi Rabbil-'alamin' (There is no god but Allah, the Most Forbearing, the Most Generous; glorified is Allah; blessed is Allah, the Lord of the Mighty Throne; and all praise is for Allah, the Lord of all the worlds). The narrator states that Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Ja'far (may Allah be pleased with him) used to prompt the dying person with these words and used to blow over one suffering from fever while reciting them.
Imam Bukhari and Muslim recorded this hadith in abridged form from the narration of Qatadah, which he took from Abu al-Aliyah, and he from Ibn Abbas.

Reference / Source: It was narrated by Imam Ahmad, Ibn Hibban (865) and al-Nasa'i through al-Layth bin Sa'd and Abd al-Wahhab bin Bukht. Defect ('illah) / Technical note: Al-Nasa'i (10393) mentioned another route which he declared a "mistake", because its narrator Abu Thawban is weak, and the correct narration is that of Ya'qub.
