It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Every person has three friends. One friend is the one who says: 'What you have spent is yours, and what you have held back is not yours'; and that is his wealth. The second friend is the one who says: 'I am with you, but when you reach the door of the King, I will leave you and go back'; and that is his family and servants. The third friend is the one who says: 'I am with you wherever you enter or leave'; and that is his deeds. The servant says to him (the third friend): 'You were the most insignificant of the three to me.'"
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it in this complete form, because they turned away from Imran al-Qattan, although he is not so discredited that his hadith should be abandoned; and the two Shaykhs agreed upon the hadith narrated from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him): "When the deceased dies, three things follow him."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Nu'man bin Bashir (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The example of a person and death is like a man who has three friends. One of them said: 'This is my wealth; take from it whatever you wish.' The second said: 'I am with you during your life, but when you die I will leave you.' The third said: 'I am with you; I will enter (the grave) with you and come out with you, whether you die or live.' As for the one who said, 'Take whatever you wish and leave whatever you wish', that is his wealth. The second is his relatives, and the third is his deeds."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Muslim, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.
