Sending food to the family of the deceased

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Ja'far (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that when the news of the martyrdom of Ja'far (may Allah be pleased with him) came, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Prepare food for the family of Ja'far, for a matter has befallen them that has preoccupied them."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it. Ja'far bin Khalid bin Sarah is among the senior Shaykhs of Quraysh; concerning such people Shu'bah said: Write (hadith) from the nobles, for they do not lie. He also narrated another hadith in detail besides this one:

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Ja'far (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: If only you had seen me, Qutham and Ubaydullah bin Abbas playing, when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by on a mount and said: "Carry this one up to me." So he (peace and blessings be upon him) seated me in front of him. Then he said about Qutham: "Carry this one up to me," and seated him behind him. He (peace and blessings be upon him) did not feel shy before his uncle Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) that he took Qutham up and left Ubaydullah. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) passed his hand over my head three times, and whenever he passed his hand he would say: "O Allah, be Ja'far's successor among his children." I asked Abdullah bin Ja'far: What became of Qutham? He said: He was martyred. I said: Allah and His Messenger knew best what was good for him. He said: Yes.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Ja'far (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) passed his blessed hand over my head - the narrator said: I think he said three times - and whenever he passed his hand he would say: 'Allahumma ukhluf Ja'faran fi waladih' (O Allah, be Ja'far's successor among his children).
Ja'far bin Khalid has narrated two rare Sunnahs: one is passing the hand over the head of an orphan, and the other is looking after a grieving family so that they have food for the night. May Allah grant us the ability to act upon them.
