Ash'ath bin Abd al-Malik al-Humrani narrates from al-Hasan, who narrates from Sayyiduna Abu Bakrah (may Allah be pleased with him), that "the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), in a state of fear, led the people in the Maghrib prayer, three rak'ahs; then he (peace and blessings be upon him) turned away, and the others came, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) led them (too) in three rak'ahs." I heard Abu Ali al-Hafiz say: "This hadith is gharib (singular); Ash'ath al-Humrani wrote it only with this chain." Imam al-Hakim said: "And it is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim)."

Mujahid narrates from Abu Ayyash al-Zuraqi (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: We were with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) at Usfan, and the polytheists were led by Khalid bin al-Walid. We prayed the Zuhr prayer, and the polytheists said: "We have let an opportunity slip, we have let a moment of their heedlessness slip; if only we had attacked them while they were in prayer!" So the verse of shortening (the prayer in fear) was revealed between Zuhr and Asr. When the time of Asr came, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) stood facing the Qiblah with the polytheists in front of him. A row formed behind the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and another row formed behind that row. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) bowed, and they all bowed. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) prostrated, and the row that had bowed with him (peace and blessings be upon him) prostrated, while the others stood guarding them. When these had performed the two prostrations and stood up, those behind them prostrated. Then the row next to him moved back to the place of the others, and the rear row came forward to the place of the first row. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) bowed, and they all bowed. Then the row next to him (peace and blessings be upon him) prostrated, while the others stood guarding them. When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and the row next to him (peace and blessings be upon him) sat down, the others prostrated. Then they all sat, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) gave the salam to all of them. He (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed it this way at Usfan and also prayed it on the day of Banu Sulaym.

It is narrated from Abu al-Aswad that he heard Urwah bin al-Zubayr narrating from Marwan bin al-Hakam that he asked Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him): "Have you prayed the fear prayer with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)?" Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Yes." Marwan asked: "When?" Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "In the year of the expedition of Najd. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) stood up for the prayer, that is, the Asr prayer. One group stood with him (peace and blessings be upon him), and the other group stood facing the enemy with their backs toward the Qiblah. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said the takbir, and they all said the takbir, both those who were with him (peace and blessings be upon him) and those who were facing the enemy. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) bowed once, and the group behind him (peace and blessings be upon him) also bowed. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) prostrated, and the group next to him (peace and blessings be upon him) also prostrated, while the others remained standing facing the enemy. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) stood up, and the group with him (peace and blessings be upon him) also stood up, and they went toward the enemy and faced them. The group that had been facing the enemy came and bowed and prostrated, while the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) remained standing as he was. Then they stood up, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) made the bowing of another rak'ah and they bowed with him (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) prostrated and they prostrated with him (peace and blessings be upon him). Then the group that had been facing the enemy came and bowed and prostrated, while the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and those with him (peace and blessings be upon him) remained sitting. Then came the salam: the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) gave the salam and they all gave the salam. So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had two rak'ahs, and each man of the two groups had one rak'ah."
