Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 1269

Hind bint al-Harith narrates from Umm al-Fadl (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came to visit them while Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him), the uncle of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), was ill, and Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) wished for death. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: "O uncle! Do not wish for death, for if you are a doer of good, you will be given respite so that you may add more good to your good, which is better for you; and if you are a wrongdoer, you will be given respite so that you may repent of your sins, which is better for you. So do not wish for death."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it with these words. They agreed on the hadith of Qays from Khabbab: "Had the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) not forbidden us to wish for death, I would certainly have wished for it."

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: (1) The chain is fit to be graded hasan; only Yazid bin 'Abdullah bin Usamah bin al-Had narrated from Hind bint al-Harith, and Ibn Hibban mentioned her among the trustworthy (thiqat) Successors. Umm al-Fadl refers to Lubabah bint al-Harith (the wife of al-'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him)).
Reference / Source: Ahmad narrated it in the Musnad (44/26874) through two chains from al-Layth bin Sa'd.
(Note / Clarification): "Tasta'tib" means: to turn back from wrongdoing and seek Allah's pleasure and good-will.

Technical note: (3) In the manuscripts it had become "bin"; the correct form is "Qays from Khabbab".
