Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 1268

It is narrated from Abu al-Aswad that he heard Urwah bin al-Zubayr narrating from Marwan bin al-Hakam that he asked Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him): "Have you prayed the fear prayer with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)?" Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Yes." Marwan asked: "When?" Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "In the year of the expedition of Najd. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) stood up for the prayer, that is, the Asr prayer. One group stood with him (peace and blessings be upon him), and the other group stood facing the enemy with their backs toward the Qiblah. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said the takbir, and they all said the takbir, both those who were with him (peace and blessings be upon him) and those who were facing the enemy. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) bowed once, and the group behind him (peace and blessings be upon him) also bowed. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) prostrated, and the group next to him (peace and blessings be upon him) also prostrated, while the others remained standing facing the enemy. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) stood up, and the group with him (peace and blessings be upon him) also stood up, and they went toward the enemy and faced them. The group that had been facing the enemy came and bowed and prostrated, while the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) remained standing as he was. Then they stood up, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) made the bowing of another rak'ah and they bowed with him (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) prostrated and they prostrated with him (peace and blessings be upon him). Then the group that had been facing the enemy came and bowed and prostrated, while the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and those with him (peace and blessings be upon him) remained sitting. Then came the salam: the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) gave the salam and they all gave the salam. So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had two rak'ahs, and each man of the two groups had one rak'ah."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it. [Here begins the Book of Funerals]

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note: (1) This word was not in the manuscripts; it was restored from the other sources.

Technical note: (2) The printed edition had "rak'atan" (nominative), whereas grammatically "rak'atayn" is correct (as the predicate of kana).

Grading: (3) Its chain is sahih. Abu al-Aswad refers to "Yatim 'Urwah" (Muhammad bin 'Abd al-Rahman).
Reference / Source: Ahmad (14/8260), Abu Dawud (1240) and al-Nasa'i narrated it through Abu 'Abd al-Rahman al-Muqri'.
Variation in the chain: The narration of Ahmad and al-Nasa'i mentions "two rak'ahs each", while that of al-Hakim and Abu Dawud mentions "one rak'ah each". According to al-Bayhaqi, the correct version is "two rak'ahs each"; perhaps "one rak'ah" means the rak'ah prayed with the imam.
Variation in the chain: Abu Dawud (1241) and Ibn Hibban narrated it without the link of Marwan, but according to al-Daraqutni the version with Marwan's link is preferable.
