Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 1266

Ash'ath bin Abd al-Malik al-Humrani narrates from al-Hasan, who narrates from Sayyiduna Abu Bakrah (may Allah be pleased with him), that "the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), in a state of fear, led the people in the Maghrib prayer, three rak'ahs; then he (peace and blessings be upon him) turned away, and the others came, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) led them (too) in three rak'ahs." I heard Abu Ali al-Hafiz say: "This hadith is gharib (singular); Ash'ath al-Humrani wrote it only with this chain." Imam al-Hakim said: "And it is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim)."

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: (2) All the narrators are thiqah except 'Amr bin Khalifah; the narrations of 'Amr bin Khalifah contain some "munkar" material, and here he has contradicted trustworthy narrators.
Reference / Source: Al-Bayhaqi (3/260) narrated it through Abu 'Abdullah al-Hakim.
Reference / Source: Ibn Khuzaymah (1368), and through him al-Daraqutni (1783), narrated it through Muhammad bin Ma'mar.
(Note / Clarification): According to Abu Dawud, in the fear prayer at Maghrib the imam will have six rak'ahs and the followers three each (i.e. in turns). Al-Bayhaqi also pointed to this, but in some copies it is treated as the statement of Ash'ath, and its being marfu' (a saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)) is regarded as an error.
Grading: The better-known and more reliable narration from Ash'ath is that he (peace and blessings be upon him) led each group in two rak'ahs, so that he (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed four and the followers two each. Ahmad, al-Nasa'i, Abu Dawud and Ibn Hibban narrated it through Yahya al-Qattan and others. According to most of them, he (peace and blessings be upon him) gave the salam after the first two rak'ahs, and this prayer was Zuhr.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: The two-rak'ah narration is also supported by the corroboration of Abu Hamzah al-Raqashi, found in al-Tayalisi, al-Bazzar and al-Tahawi.
