Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 1265

Urwah narrates from Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her), who said: "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) led the fear prayer. He (peace and blessings be upon him) divided the people into two parts: one group formed a row behind him (peace and blessings be upon him), and one group stood facing the enemy. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said the takbir, and the group that had formed a row behind him (peace and blessings be upon him) said the takbir. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) bowed and they bowed; then he (peace and blessings be upon him) prostrated and they prostrated; then he (peace and blessings be upon him) raised his head and they raised their heads. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) remained sitting, and they performed the second prostration for themselves. Then they stood up, then walked backwards on their heels until they stood behind them. The other group came and formed a row behind the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him); they said the takbir and then bowed for themselves. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) made his second prostration, and they prostrated with him (peace and blessings be upon him). Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) stood up for his (second) rak'ah, and they performed the second prostration for themselves. Then both groups stood and formed rows behind the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) led them in one rak'ah; they all bowed together, then he (peace and blessings be upon him) prostrated and they all prostrated together, then he (peace and blessings be upon him) raised his head and they raised their heads with him (peace and blessings be upon him). The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) did all of this very quickly and spared no effort to shorten it as much as he could. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) gave the salam and they gave the salam. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) stood up, and the people had shared with him (peace and blessings be upon him) in his entire prayer."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Muslim, but the two Shaykhs did not record it, and it is the most complete and most satisfying hadith about the fear prayer.

(Note / Clarification): "Sad'atayn": sad' originally means a crack; here it means that he (peace and blessings be upon him) divided the army into two parts.
